Long‐term clinical and cost‐effectiveness of a therapist‐supported online remote behavioural intervention for tics in children and adolescents: Extended 12‐ and 18‐month follow‐up of a single‐blind ra…
BACKGROUND: Little is known about the long-term effectiveness of behavioural therapy for tics. We aimed to assess the long-term clinical and cost-effectiveness of online therapist-supported exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy for tics 12 and 18 months after treatment initiation. METHODS: ORBIT (online remote behavioural intervention for tics) was a two-arm (1:1 ratio), superiority, single-blind, multicentre randomised controlled trial …
Cost-effectiveness of peer-supported self-management for people discharged from a mental health crisis team: Methodological challenges and recommendations
There was a minimum 57% chance that the intervention was cost-effective compared to the control using 12-month costs and QALYs. The probability varied by 40% when methods were employed to account for the relationship between costs and QALYs, but which restricted the sample to those who provided both complete cost and utility data. Caution should therefore be applied when selecting methods for the evaluation of healthcare interventions that aim to…
The Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on tic symptoms in children and young people: A prospective cohort study
To understand how children and young people with tic disorders were affected by COVID-19, we compared pre and during pandemic scores on the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS). Participants were young people (N = 112; male:78%; 9-17 years) randomised to the control arm of the "ORBIT-Trial" (ISRCTN70758207, ClinicalTrials.gov-NCT03483493). For this analysis, the control arm was split into two groups: one group was followed up to 12-months' post…
Psychological distress, gender and dietary factors in South Asians: A cross-sectional survey
Objective Psychological distress, defined as symptoms of depression and anxiety, is an increasingly important public health issue in developing countries. Little is known about the extent to which adverse dietary factors are associated with psychological distress in South Asians. Our aim was to compare the associations of diet and psychological distress in men and women in Goa, India. Design Cross-sectional study of consecutive attendees in nine …
Religion, spirituality and mental health: Results from a national study of English households
BACKGROUND: Religious participation or belief may predict better mental health but most research is American and measures of spirituality are often conflated with well-being. AIMS: To examine associations between a spiritual or religious understanding of life and psychiatric symptoms and diagnoses. METHOD: We analysed data collected from interviews with 7403 people who participated in the third National Psychiatric Morbidity Study in England. RES…
Depression, anxiety and physical function: Exploring the strength of causality
BACKGROUND: Depression, anxiety and physical function may be bi-directionally related. We aim to estimate the strength of the longitudinal associations between depression, anxiety and physical function. METHODS: Prospective cohort study of general practice attendees across Europe (N=4757) assessed at baseline, 6, 12 and 24 months. Main outcome measures were Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV major depression, Patient Health …
Associations between unemployment and major depressive disorder: Evidence from an international, prospective study (the predict cohort)
Older People's Experiences of Loneliness in the UK: Does Gender Matter
The extent and nature of loneliness in later life does not show a consistent relationship with gender. Our study investigates whether there are differences in the nature and extent of loneliness amongst older men and women in contemporary Britain. Loneliness was measured using a self-report four-point scale in a nationally representative survey of people aged 65+ living in the community. Survey response rate was 77 per cent and the sample of 999 …
