Using the Bender Gestalt in South Africa: Some Normative Data for Zulu-speaking Children
In this study the authors investigated the use of the Bender Gestalt test within the South African context by evaluating the applicability of the existing norms (Koppitz) and by exploring how the variables age, sex, educational level, and geographical area affect test performance in Zulu-speaking school children. Zulu-speaking subjects ( N = 882) ranging in age from 6–18 years, completed the test. The test was administered in group form and indep…

Attitudes towards Rape and Rapists: A White, English-Speaking South African Student Sample
A vignette methodology was used to examine the effects of varying a sexual assault offender's ascribed race and class on attributions of responsibility to the victim, sentencing judgements for the offender, and perceptions of the victim. Respondents were 183 young white South African English-speaking students, male and female, domiciled in university residences in 1987 at the University of Cape Town. Measured by sentencing decisions, subjects wer…

The Trail Making Test: A Review of Research in Children
The Trail Making Test (TMT) is widely used in neuropsychological practice as part of a battery for detecting neuropsychological dysfunction. A comprehensive review published by Horton in 1979, focused on adult performance. A critical evaluation of research investigating the use of this test in children is presented here. No clear set of instructions for test use is available for children and, while some aspects of neuropsychological function are …
The Trail Making Test: Performance in a Non-Clinical Sample of Children Aged 10 to 15 Years
The association of Full Scale IQ (determined on the New South African Group Test), age, education level and gender with performance on the Trail Making Test (TMT) in 260 middle-class, white English-speaking schoolchildren in the age range 10 to 15 years, was investigated. The sample equally represented girls and boys in Stds 3 to 7. Age-based comparisons with Spreen and Gaddes's Canadian sample, and Reitan's American sample, revealed this South A…
A Study of Childhood Sexual Abuse among South African University Women Students
There are no prevalence figures for childhood sexual abuse among South African women university students. This study addressed this gap, providing figures for an unselected, non-clinical group of 94 women students who constituted the sample at the University of Cape Town. A review of the methodological problems in this kind of research suggests that one of these concerns the stigma associated with sexual abuse. A novel approach which combines a s…
