Does population composition of a village influence public school quality? Evidence from rural India
In this paper, we investigate whether the population composition of villages is associated with the quality of public schools in rural India. We use two parameters to assess the quality of public schools – school infrastructure and teachers’ presence. Using a recent round of Census and District Information System for Education data, we find that the caste composition of a village is associated with the quality of public schools. Villages inhabite…
Using Satellite Images and Deep Learning to Measure Health and Living Standards in India
Using deep learning with satellite images enhances our understanding of human development at a granular spatial and temporal level. Most studies have focused on Africa and on a narrow set of asset-based indicators. This article leverages georeferenced village-level census data from across 40% of the population of India to train deep models that predicts 16 indicators of human well-being from Landsat 7 imagery. Based on the principles of transfer …
Do we need to vaccinate every child against Covid-19
It is still debatable whether all children should receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The comparatively mild cases and low risk of COVID-19 in children compared to adults, as well as the lack of clarity on the relative effects of the disease and vaccine, indicate that the risk-benefit ratio of vaccination in children is more nuanced. To consider and highlight the complexity of policy decisions regarding COVID-19 vaccination in children, we outlined the…
Women’s experience of post-natal care
Although significant strides have been made in improving maternal and child health outcomes following the millennium development goals, India's progress has been slow, as reflected by its relatively high maternal and child mortality rates. This calls for investigation into the quality of care (QOC) offered to women during pregnancy and childbirth. This study uses primary data to evaluate women's experience of the postnatal care they receive in or…
Labour Market for Young Urban Female Graduates in India
This study examines long-term trends in the labour market outcomes of young urban female graduates in India. Using nationally representative employment data, we find that a rise in the adjusted labour force participation rate of young educated women (15–29 years) between 1999 and 2000 and 2011–12 was not accompanied by a corresponding improvement in their access to suitable employment opportunities. We provide evidence of the inability of the lab…
Political Trust, Democratic Satisfaction, and Partisanship
How does economic hardship during a crisis affect people’s evaluation of the political leadership? In this paper, we investigate how the negative impact of an exogenous event like COVID-19 interacts with other important phenomena which influence leadership approval, such as partisanship, political trust, and satisfaction with democracy. Using a nationally representative survey in Indonesia (N = 1,200), we show that economic hardship does not unif…

Caste Discrimination in Provision of Public Schools in Rural India
This paper aims to understand discrimination in the provision of public schools in rural India and how it affects the educational outcome of social groups. Using census data, we find that villages with a higher share of marginalised castes viz. Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) have a lower probability of having public schools. The negative relationship is non-monotonic as the marginal probabilities get weaker beyond a threshold lev…
Universalisation versus targeting in maternal and child health care provisioning
To eradicate the persistent inequality in utilisation of Maternal Health Care Services (MHCS), India's Government has adopted various programmes under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in 2005. The Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), a demand-side intervention, is one of the flagship programmes under the NRHM. Using two rounds of the nationally representative National Family Health Survey (NFHS) data collected in 2005-06 and 2015-16, respectivel…
