The Effects of Urban Bus Driving on Blood Pressure and Musculoskeletal Problems: A Quasi-Experimental Study
OBJECTIVE: Work settings with high levels of stress are consistently associated with poor health outcomes. This study examines the longitudinal relationships between the number of hours of driving a bus in a city and blood pressure and musculoskeletal problems. METHODS: A prospective longitudinal design coupled with multilevel random coefficient modeling was used to examine the relationship among exposure to a job with high level of stress, urban…
A life-span perspective on women's careers, health, and well-being
Women's Career Patterns in Sweden: A life event approach
Although research on and models of career patterns are often implicitly assumed to be of general validity, they are usually coloured by their cultural, ethnic and historical background and by a lack of gender perspective. One of the most critical research gaps concerns changes and transitions in women's careers. The general aim of this paper is to describe career patterns over the life course of women born in the 1950s in Sweden — in terms of sha…
Residence in the Social Ecology of Stress and Restoration
We relate residence to health within a social ecological model of stress and restoration. As an isolated setting and in relation to other everyday settings, we discuss the residence in terms of demands, coping resources and responses, and opportunities for restoration. Our model indicates how processes operating above the household level can affect health by modifying the quantity, quality, and distribution of demands, resources, and restoration …
Work-life Balance: The Case of Sweden in the 1990s
This article presents an overview of Swedish conditions with regard to work-life balance in the 1990s. This decade was characterized by high unemployment, increasing frequency of insecure employment contracts and downsizing, but also by increasing productivity. National statistics and scientific surveys indicate that large groups of the Swedish labour force experienced increasing work-load and intensification of work routines. At the end of the d…
Hassles on the job: A study of a job intervention with urban bus drivers
Epidemiological, psychophysiological and survey data all converge on the conclusion that driving a bus in an urban area is extremely stressful, posing serious health risks. We show that reductions in job hassles while operating buses largely account for the salutary effects of a job environment intervention designed to lessen traffic congestion, diminish passenger demands on drivers, and generally ease bus operation. This study also makes methodo…
