  • Conducting tobacco control surveys among schoolchildren in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan: A feasibility study

Open Access•Masuma Pervin Mishu, Cath Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Most of the world’s 300 million smokeless tobacco (ST) users live in South Asia but ST policies for that region are poorly researched, developed and implemented. Longitudinal studies to understand the uptake and use of ST and smoking, and influences on these, such as health promotion strategies, are lacking. We planned to conduct longitudinal surveys among secondary school students in three countries with the highest ST burden: Bangladesh, India …

  • How is nicotine vaping product (e-cigarette) use monitored in primary care electronic health records in the United Kingdom? An exploratory analysis of Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD)

Open Access•Bernadett E Tildy, Allan Mcneill et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

Few patients are being asked about vaping. Most who vape had smoked, and many quit smoking after starting vaping. To enable electronic health records to provide stronger evidence on health effects, we recommend improved completeness, accuracy and consistency

  • Do post‐quitting experiences predict smoking relapse among former smokers in Australia and the United Kingdom? Findings from the International Tobacco Control Surveys

Open Access•Bradley Gorniak, Hua-Hie Yong et al.•ARTICLE•Drug and Alcohol Review•2022

  • Contingency management for tobacco smoking during opioid addiction treatment: Implementation challenges

Open Access•Tom S Ainscough, Leonie Brose et al.•ARTICLE•Drug and Alcohol Review•2021

  • Transitions in smoking and nicotine use from 2016 to 2017 among a UK cohort of adult smokers and ex‐smokers

Open Access•Erikas Simonavičius, Allan Mcneill et al.•ARTICLE•Drug and Alcohol Review•2020

  • International differences in patterns of cannabis use among adult cigarette smokers: Findings from the 2018 ITC Four Country Smoking and Vaping Survey

Open Access•Shannon Gravely, Pete Driezen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2020

Patterns of tobacco and cannabis co-use differed between countries. Smokers in Canada and the US had higher rates of co-use, daily cannabis use, dual-daily use of both cannabis and cigarettes, and were more likely to perceive smoked cannabis as less harmful than cigarettes compared to England and Australia. Further attention as to how varying cannabis regulations may impact co-use patterns is warranted

  • E-Cigarette Regulation in the United States and the United Kingdom: Two Countries Divided by a Common Language

Allan Mcneill, Ann Mcneill et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2019•References: 1

  • Nicotine, Carcinogen, and Toxin Exposure in Long-Term E-Cigarette and Nicotine Replacement Therapy Users: A Cross-sectional Study

Open Access•Lion Shahab, Maciej Ł Goniewicz et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Internal Medicine•2017

BACKGROUND: Given the rapid increase in the popularity of e-cigarettes and the paucity of associated longitudinal health-related data, the need to assess the potential risks of long-term use is essential. OBJECTIVE: To compare exposure to nicotine, tobacco-related carcinogens, and toxins among smokers of combustible cigarettes only, former smokers with long-term e-cigarette use only, former smokers with long-term nicotine replacement therapy (NRT…

  • Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems

    Open Access•Sarah E Adkison, Richard J O’connor et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Preventive…•2013

  • Tobacco display and brand communication at the point of sale: Implications for adolescent smoking behaviour

Open Access•Dionysis Spanopoulos, John Britton et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2013

Exposure to and awareness of PoS displays and brands in displays were associated with smoking susceptibility. The association between PoS display exposure and smoking susceptibility was predominantly due to exposure in small shops. These findings suggest that a one-off, comprehensive tobacco display ban is the recommended approach for countries considering a display ban

  • Countering the demand for, and supply of, illicit tobacco: An assessment of the ‘North of England Tackling Illicit Tobacco for Better Health’ Programme

Open Access•Allan Mcneill, Ann Mcneill et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2013

A partnership of agencies, with competing values, was established to tackle IT, a complex public health issue and, inter alia, implemented a social marketing campaign using novel messages. This improved the flow of intelligence about the supply of IT and increased awareness of IT

  • Can data from primary care medical records be used to monitor national smoking prevalence

Lisa Szatkowski, Sarah Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 6

BACKGROUND: Data from primary care records could potentially provide more comprehensive population-level information on smoking prevalence at lower cost and in a more timely fashion than commissioned national surveys. Therefore, we compared smoking prevalence calculated from a database of primary care electronic medical records with that from a 'gold standard' national survey to determine whether or not medical records can provide accurate popula…

  • Support for smoke-free policy, and awareness of tobacco health effects and use of smoking cessation therapy in a developing country

    Open Access•Ellis Owusu-Dabo, Ellis Owusu‐Dabo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

Awareness of health risks and support for smoke-free policy are high in Ghana. Exposure to tobacco advertising or promotion is limited and most smokers have tried to quit. Whether these findings are cause or effect of current low smoking prevalence is uncertain

  • Smoking Attitudes, Behaviour and Nicotine Dependence Among Mental Health Acute Inpatients: An Exploratory Study

Open Access•Elena Ratschen, John Britton et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2010

Background: In 2008, mental health units in England went smoke-free by law. This study explores inpatients’ experience with a smoke-free policy, their smoking behaviour, dependence, withdrawal and related issues. Material: Semi-structured interviews in a criterion sample of 15 inpatient smokers. Discussion: Patients generally approved of the smoke-free policy, provided they could smoke outside. Most participants had changed their smoking behaviou…

  • How reactions to cigarette packet health warnings influence quitting: Findings from the ITC Four‐Country survey

    Open Access•Ron Borland, Hua-Hie Yong et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction•2009

Objectives To examine prospectively the impact of health warnings on quitting activity. Design Five waves (2002–06) of a cohort survey where reactions to health warnings at one survey wave are used to predict cessation activity at the next wave, controlling for country (proxy for warning differences) and other factors. These analyses were replicated on four wave‐to‐wave transitions. Setting and participants Smokers from Australia, Canada, the Uni…
