Tiberius and the Charisma of Augustus
The historian Tacitus began his Annals with the death of Augustus. He considered this date, not Actium, to be the pivotal moment in the crystallization of 'rule by one man.' This book considers the role played by Augustus' successor Tiberius in preserving the system created by the ultimate victor of Rome's civil wars. Drawing upon the work of sociologists and political scientists, it uses the lens of the routinization of charisma to demonstrate h…
Investigation of Covid-19 transmission during the first community outbreak in a remote island population, Falkland Islands, April to June 2022
After 2 years of no community outbreaks of COVID-19, the Falkland Islands (FI) reported their first community case in April 2022. Because of high vaccine coverage (88% of entire population), no specific control measures were instigated, and cases spread rapidly. We undertook a retrospective cohort study to determine the extent of transmission and the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccine in a population with limited natural immunity. We extracted dat…

New Directions in Political History
This roundtable takes up old themes and new perspectives in the field of political history. Scholars engage with six questions across three main categories: the scope of the field, current debates, and teaching. The first two questions ask how we should think about political power and the boundaries of what constitute political history. The section on current debates interrogates the relationship between governing and social movements during the …

Pliny's Tacitus
As Eleanor Winsor Leach and others have demonstrated, in the corpus of the Letters Pliny represents different aspects of his ideal self through the way he characterizes his relationships with his correspondents. This paper examines more closely the letters to and about Tacitus, disregarding intertextual references between the works of Tacitus and Pliny (a well-mined field), and shifting the focus to the friendly competition Pliny creates with Tac…

Disconnect and capture of education decentralisation reforms in Nepal
This article argues that processes of disconnect and capture have affected Nepal's efforts to decentralise its education system, leading to a failure to engage the very stakeholders – parents and communities – that the reforms sought to reach. Specifically, disconnect occurred in the development and implementation of the latest ‘decentralisation’ reforms because they were formulated via a highly centralised policy-making process and then implemen…

A Stochastic Policy Simulation of the World Coffee Economy
The paper analyzes the structure of the world coffee market and suggests policies that stabilize the export earnings of coffee‐exporting countries. The major cyclical characteristics of the coffee economy may be explained by a simultaneous equation model, which considers the lagged response of supply to price. The most successful policies include the development of rapidly maturing trees and the imposition of a quota on exports, both of which are…
