Representation of social class in Korean ELT materials
Within English language textbook (ELT) research, studies across national contexts show that neoliberal ideology pervades the textual and visual content of textbooks. However, little attention has been paid specifically to social class and how its representations fit within the neoliberal discourses of ELT textbooks. In this paper, drawing on multimodal critical discourse analysis, we consider how ELT textbooks in Korea represent social class in t…
Representing societies in language teaching textbooks
This introductory article to the special issue on representing societies in language teaching textbooks lays out how to analytically approach the data using multimodal critical discourse analysis. Foremost, it explains that we must place the texts into the socio-political context of the societies where they are produced. Doing such critical multimodal analysis is not about the texts per se, but is concerned rather with their role in the social an…
Neoliberal, trouble-free worlds for an aspirational middle-class in Chinese EFL publications
For most English language learning engagements in expanding circle countries, textbooks play a key role in defining a syllabus and corralling students toward some measure of completion in a course of study. While scholars have shown how English is broadly seen as a prestigious skill, connected with upward socio-economic mobility, less work has been done on the discourses and ideologies carried by the textbooks, even though this is a billion-dolla…
Deconstructing innercirclism
English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers and students are often pressured to use generic, globally published textbooks featuring ‘inner-circle’ social realities. While some studies look at specific instances of content that socially marginalizes their intended audiences, few attempt comprehensive examinations of the multimodal ensembles on each opened page. Inspired by critical discourse studies that problematize some textbooks as vehicles fo…
Is this discursive Yentling? A critical study of an RCMP officer’s interaction with a child sexual assault complainant
The present study features an interview between a Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer and a female indigenous minor, who was reporting her own sexual assault. The study highlights how the child's interview with the officer appears to include gender-specific judgements. Thus far, few critical studies, underscoring interview techniques, feature power relations and ideologies in the discourse. This study identifies police negotiation with f…
Triple Aim
There is little research on behavioral health consultants addressing The Triple Aim goals in a community setting. This study examined the behavioral health consultants' effect on (1) reducing overall patient cost and (2) improving population health by examining psychological screening measures, healthcare utilization, and hospital charges. Results revealed changes in patient charges: emergency department encounters reduce by 8 percent, psychologi…

Understanding the new human genetics
Preventing cardiovascular disease through community-based risk reduction
OBJECTIVES. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a community-based risk reduction project affected behavioral risk factors for cardiovascular disease. METHODS. Community-based activities (e.g., exercise groups, healthy cooking demonstrations, blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, and cardiovascular disease education) were conducted in six southeastern Missouri counties. Evaluation involved population-based, cross-sectional samp…
A Morphological Analysis of Late Prehistoric and Romano-British Settlements in North West Wales
The morphology of a group of settlement sites in North West Wales is used to demonstrate an application of Numerical Taxonomy. Using average link cluster analysis 83 out of a total of 285 known sites are grouped into seven morphological classes which provide a basis for further analysis and interpretation
