Can land use policy effectively encourage activity levels among older adults, even during hot seasons
Examining the relationship between neighbourhood satisfaction, physical activity, and well-being in 11 cities in the Global South during the Covid-19 pandemic
Examining the roles of perceived neighbourhood environments in shaping social capital and the happiness of older adults in a super-aged Asian City
As society transitions into super-aged populations, new urban challenges, such as the mobility and health of older adults, have emerged. These challenges can significantly impact quality of life, potentially leading to reduced happiness and highlighting the need for evidence-based policies. Various disciplines have proposed innovative approaches to address these challenges, with land use policies increasingly emphasised in the urban and transport…
Physical distancing and its association with travel behavior in daily pre-pandemic urban life
This study analyzed physical distancing in people’s daily lives and its association with travel behavior and the use of transportation modes before the COVID-19 outbreak. We used data from photographic images acquired automatically by lifelogging devices every 5 seconds, on average, from 170 participants of a 2-day wearable camera study, in order to identify their physical distancing status throughout the day. Using deep-learning computer vision …
Re-examining the role of street network configuration on bicycle commuting using crowdsourced data
Understanding the role of street network configuration on commuter cycling can aid city planners in assessing and evaluating interventions to promote regular cycling into people's routines. Studies examining this relationship generally build models on observed cycling counts. While this provides valuable information, it could still result in an incomplete picture because some routes with advantages (e.g., good accessibility, amenities etc) may no…
Assessing the socio-demographic representativeness of mobile phone application data
Emerging forms of mobile phone data generated from the use of mobile phone applications have the potential to advance scientific research across a range of disciplines. However, there are risks regarding uncertainties in the socio-demographic representativeness of these data, which may introduce bias and mislead policy recommendations. This paper addresses the issue directly by developing a novel approach to assessing socio-demographic representa…
Neighbourhood deprivation, changes in walking attitudes during the Covid-19 pandemic and walking demand in the post-pandemic period
Investigating the temporal changes in the relationships between time spent on the internet and non-mandatory activity-travel time use
The amount of time we spend online has been increasing dramatically, influencing our daily travel and activity patterns. However, empirical studies on changes in the extent to which the amount of time spent online are related to changes in our activity and travel patterns are scarce, mainly due to a lack of available longitudinal or quasi-longitudinal data. This paper explores how the relationships between the time spent using the Internet, and t…
An analysis of the role of residential location on the relationships between time spent online and non-mandatory activity-travel time use over time
Predicting cycling volumes using crowdsourced activity data
Planning for cycling is often made difficult by the lack of detailed information about when and where cycling takes place. Many have seen the arrival of new forms of data such as crowdsourced data as a potential saviour. One of the key challenges posed by these data forms is understanding how representative they are of the population. To address this challenge, a limited number of studies have compared crowdsourced cycling data to ground truth co…
The impact of privacy protection measures on the utility of crowdsourced cycling data
Integrated Multimedia City Data (iMCD)
We describe the Integrated Multimedia City Data (iMCD), a data platform involving detailed person-level self-reported and sensed information, with additional Internet, remote sensing, crowdsourced and environmental data sources that measure the wider social, economic and physical context of the participant. Selected aspects of the platform, which covers the Glasgow, UK, city-region, are available to other researchers, and allows knowledge discove…
The evaluation of large cycling infrastructure investments in Glasgow using crowdsourced cycle data
The benefits of cycling have been well established for several decades. It can improve public health and make cities more active and environmentally friendly. Due to the significant net benefits, many local governments in Scotland have promoted cycling. Glasgow City Council constructed four significant pieces of cycling infrastructure between 2013 and 2015, partly in preparation for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and partly to encourage cycling more…
Examining the relationship between different urbanization settings, smartphone use to access the Internet and trip frequencies

Visualising where commuting cyclists travel using crowdsourced data
Encouraging more cycling is increasingly seen as an important way to create more sustainable cities and to improve public health. Understanding how cyclists travel and how to encourage cycling requires data; something which has traditionally been lacking. New sources of data are emerging which promise to reveal new insights. In this paper, we use data from the activity tracking app Strava to examine where people in Glasgow cycle and how new forms…
How Does Internet Usage Influence Young Travelers’ Choices
New technologies have significant effects on travel behavior, attitudes, habits and potentially future travel demand. Effects may be more prominent for Millennials. Little empirical research has investigated these relationships, mainly due to data limitations. This study focuses on the potential influence of using the Internet while traveling on Millennials’ plans for car ownership. We examine two questions: Does using the Internet while travelin…
How does the seasonality influence utilitarian walking behaviour in different urbanization settings in Scotland
How do built-environment factors affect travel behavior? A spatial analysis at different geographic scales
The role of the built environment on perceived safety from crime and walking
