St Christopher's Hospice, London, was founded to provide specialist care to the incurably ill. We studied the dimensions of difference that set St Christopher's Hospice apart from hospital care of the dying, focusing on physical space and social organization. Modernization theories of Weber, Parsons, Mannheim, Elias and Habermas are used to analyze continuity of care. Discontinuities are considered unintended consequences of formal rationality and differentiation in health care, leading to a fragmented, disease-oriented health care system.
