    Data from the 1980 Survey of Maternal-Child Health/Family Planning in Northeastern Brazil (Bahia Paraiba Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte) indicate a mean duration of breastfeeding of 6.6 months and a mean postpartum amenorrhea of 3.8 months. Given the relatively high infant mortality in the area and the known health benefits of breastfeeding the short duration can be considered to have a deleterious effect on the health of the population.   • Community-Based Distribution of Oral Contraceptives in Rio Grande do Norte, Northeastern Brazil

    The establishment and results of a community-based distribution of oral contraceptives (OCs) in Rio Grande do Norte is presented. The Sociedad Civil de Bem Estar Familiar no Brasil (BEMFAM; Brazilian Association for Family Welfare) set up such a distribution program without commercial ties or incentive payments to distributors in August 1973. The program used the existing community structures. The mayors were enlisted to give the program support.…
