Early‐onset and recurrent depression in parents increases risk of intergenerational transmission to adolescent offspring
BACKGROUND: To assess whether the age-of-onset or the recurrence of parents' major depressive disorder (MDD), measured prospectively in a longitudinal birth cohort study, predicted offspring depression at age 15. METHODS: A two-generation study of New Zealanders, with prospective, longitudinal data in the parents' generation (n = 375) and cross-sectional data from their adolescent offspring (n = 612). Parent and offspring depression was measured …
Changes to family structure, household composition and address among young New Zealanders: An update
In this article, we describe the life‐time family structures, living arrangements, and residential mobility of 612 15‐year‐old New Zealanders and consider the differences in experiences of children born to younger and older mothers. All participants had a parent who is a member of the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study. Maternal age at the participant’s birth ranged from 16.3 to 41.0 years. Data on young people’s life‐time car…
Creating a Child and Youth Health Monitoring Framework to Inform Health Sector Prioritisation and Planning: Reflections on Ten Years Experience in New Zealand
The dynamic, complex and diverse living and care arrangements of young New Zealanders: Implications for policy
The living arrangements of young people in New Zealand are diverse and often complex. In this article we report the range of care and living arrangements of 209 15‐year‐old New Zealanders, 47 of whom identified as Māori. These young people were participants in the second generation of a cohort study. Data were collected from their parents via a life history calendar and analysed for variety and consistency of care arrangements, household membersh…
What is spirituality? Evidence from a New Zealand hospice study
Spirituality is increasingly understood to be important in healthcare provision, as seen in policy, guidelines and practice across many Western healthcare systems. Definitions of spirituality remain controversial, despite their importance for consistency in research and practice. This paper reports on the definition findings of a nation-wide New Zealand (NZ) study (2006–2008) that examined understandings, experiences and ways to improve spiritual…
