  • The nexus between economic, demographic, policy and human development in South Africa: An econometric analysis

Open Access•Lethabo Maponya, Kanayo Ogujiuba et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Infrastructure Policy…•2024

The Human Development Index, which accounts for both net foreign income and the total value of goods and services generated domestically, illustrates how income becomes less significant as Gross National Income (GNI) rises by using the logarithm of income. South Africa ranks 109th out of 189 countries in the Human Development Index (HDI) within the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) economic bloc, raising long-term sustainabili…

  • Parental sex-preferences in South Africa: Culture and family composition

    Open Access•Michel Garenne, Nancy Stiegler•ARTICLE•Journal of Population Research•2023•References: 1

The study investigates parental sex-preferences for children in South Africa, using answers to the 2016 DHS survey. Some 8514 women and 3618 men were asked about the ideal composition of their family. Results show major differences between women and men: women were more often indifferent (11.9% vs. 9.9%), equalitarian, i.e. preferring the same number of boys and girls (53.1% vs. 43.1%) or preferring more girls (16.7% vs. 8.4%) than men, while men…

  • Analysis of Unmarried Adolescents and Modern Contraceptives Initiation in Nigeria: Evidence from 2018 NDHS

Open Access•Kanayo Ogujiuba, Olaide Olawumi Ojoniyi et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2022

Nigeria is one of Africa’s most populous countries. Nigeria’s population is expected to exceed 400 million by 2050, putting it among the top five most populous countries in the world. High birth rates, limited contraception use, and early marriage are the main causes of this rapid increase. In Nigeria, adolescents play a substantial role in these issues, with 117 births per 1000 girls aged 15–19 years. Data for this article comes from the 2018 Ni…

  • A Review of the Underlying Factors Influencing Female Genital Mutilation in Africa

Open Access•Marinus Channel, Nancy Stiegler et al.•ARTICLE•Studies on Ethno-Medicine•2016

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a re-occurring decimal in Africa. This phenomenon is estimated to occur in over twenty-five (25) countries in Africa. It is further estimated that FGM has been performed on nearly two million adolescent women globally and more than two million adolescent women probably undergo this process on a yearly basis. This paper compared FGM features across five African countries. UNICEF and WHO datasets were used in the …

  • A Comparative Analysis of Contraceptive Use in Africa: Evidence from DHS

    Open Access•Nancy Stiegler, A Sathiya Susuman•ARTICLE•Journal of Asian and African…•2016•References: 14

The aim of this article is to show a comparative analysis of contraceptive use in areas of traditionally high fertility that have gone through profound changes. Data have been taken from the latest Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). Logistic regression models were adopted for four selected representative countries, namely Egypt, Mali, Namibia and Niger. There were two selection criteria: data should be recent, and selected countries should hav…

  • Terrorism in Nigeria: Implications of Boko Haram's movement for security and stability in the Ecowas sub-region

Ufiem Maurice Ogbonnaya, Kanayo Ogujiuba et al.•ARTICLE•African Security Review•2014•Cited by: 2

Using the Boko Haram terrorist group in Nigeria as a point of departure, this paper examines the implications of the operations of terrorist groups on the security and stability of states in West Africa. It predominantly utilises secondary sources of data. Findings indicate that the membership and operations of this terrorist group are spreading across the sub-region. This spread is consequent upon Boko Haram's collaboration with other terrorist …
