    Open Access•Jasmine Mitchell•ARTICLE•Comparative Migration Studies•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 17

In contrast to discourses of multiraciality as leading to a future beyond race, this commentary looks at how multiracial discourses and symbols underline race. Taking an overview of multiracial discourses and identities in relation to Blackness in the United States and Brazil, this commentary examines the deployment of multiraciality to maintain white supremacy. • Deployments of Multiracial Masculinity and Anti-Black Violence

    Open Access•Jasmine Mitchell•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 78

In this article, I examine how political and media discourses of multiraciality are deployed to justify guilt and innocence. I trace the deployment of multiraciality to determine who is deserving of life or death in media coverage, political rhetoric, and court records during Obama's presidency, in George Zimmerman's 2013 acquittal, and in the 2021 killing of Daunte Wright. I examine the weaponization of discourses of multiracial identities as to…

Imagining the Mulatta: Blackness in U.S. and Brazilian Media demonstrates how mixed-race women of African and European descent are harnessed in popular media as a tool to uphold white supremacy and discipline people of African descent to uphold state policies of antiblackness. Uncovering the racialized and gendered paradigms of U.S. and Brazilian media, the book uses case studies of texts from a broad range of popular culture media—film, telenove…

  • Nacionalidade e diáspora negra na música de Marcelo D2

    Open Access•Jasmine Mitchell, J H Mitchell•ARTICLE•Tensões Mundiais•2018

  • Hip-hop feminist politics in the film Antonia

    Open Access•Jasmine Mitchell•ARTICLE•Literatura e Autoritarismo•2009•References: 2

This paper examines anxieties surrounding gender, sexuality, race, and class in the film Antônia (2006). The paper analyzes how hip-hop is used as an instrument to challenge patriarchal standards. The study also demonstrates how the film represents the limitations and difficulties in undertaking feminist hip-hop politics. A narrative analysis of the film along with a brief background on hip-hop in Brazil shows how hip-hop presents a key device to…
