The conditions for connection—belonging as a health-promoting resource within higher education settings in Ireland
Student wellbeing has become an increasing concern within higher education, with evidence highlighting the importance of social connection and belonging for mental health. Guided by settings-based health promotion principles, this study examined relationships between wellbeing, belonging, loneliness, and social connectedness among university students. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among students attending a multi-campus technological uni…
Putting lived experiences at the heart of research
It is a great pleasure to introduce you to this special issue of Educational Action Research (EARJ), offered as a tribute to the work of Professor Carol Munn-Giddings. Carol was an editor of EARJ for nearly 20 years. Throughout that time, she consistently championed two specific issues she recognised as under-represented in the general literature and in the journal itself. The first was the paucity of accounts of creative forms of action research…
Exploring School Bullying
Participatory Action Research (PAR) empowers young people to work alongside adult researchers to determine the purpose/scope of research projects. By naming the purpose of the research, young people have the potential to transform it. Beginning with a broad question, we worked in collaboration with secondary school students (co-researchers) and staff to decide on the focal research question. Prior to recruiting the co-researchers, we conducted an…
Physical education student teachers’ wellbeing during Covid-19
The coronavirus 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic has given rise to significant global challenges across education, and specifically in the physical education teacher education (PETE) community. Students attending teacher education programmes during the Covid-19 pandemic have experienced an abrupt and unprecedented pedagogical transition from a face-to-face capacity to remote teaching, learning, and assessment environments. Crucially, student teachers' sc…
Participatory Research with Care Leavers to Explore their Support Experiences During the Covid-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has perpetuated the challenges faced by care leavers and increased the need for support. Online participatory research was conducted to explore care leavers’ support experiences during the pandemic. A research team of twenty-five care leavers aged sixteen to twenty-five years and support workers from six local authorities across England identified priorities and developed an online questionnaire that was completed by ninety-…
Working with Adolescents to Understand Bullying and Self–Exclusion from School
Self-exclusion from school is a significant issue in the UK and increasingly associated with bullying. However, there is little research into this relationship and the experiences and support needs of adolescents who experience bullying leading to self-exclusion are unknown. Using participatory methodology, we worked with adolescents who had self-excluded from school and the staff supporting them, to identify key issues on experiences and support…

Sports bars
Background Informed by literature on venue design and ‘nudging’ in the context of choice architecture, the purpose of this article is to investigate the physical design of, and practices enacted within, sports bars to provide some indication as to whether these venues are spaces that encourage risky drinking and betting. Methods Our analysis draws on three arms of data collection: (i) website review of licensed venues in Victoria, Australia that p…
Secondary school teachers’ and pupils’ definitions of bullying in the UK
The aim of the systematic review (SR) reported in this article was to compare how UK secondary school pupils and teachers define bullying, using the analytical framework proposed by Naylor et al (2006). Findings were drawn from five major studies – two quantitative, two qualitative and one using mixed methods – and suggest that teachers are much more likely than pupils to employ broader definitions and to include indirect forms of bullying. Possi…
