Evaluating the implementation of a prescription only regulatory model for nicotine vaping products: A qualitative study on the experiences and views of healthcare professionals
Our research identified several limitations associated with the current Australian prescription-only regulatory model. These were perceived by healthcare professionals to limit the potential for the regulations to reduce youth use and to increase access to safer NVP products for people who smoke to use for smoking cessation
Socioeconomic, Behavioural, and Social Health Correlates of Optimism and Pessimism in Older Men and Women: A Cross-Sectional Study
Factors associated with higher optimism and lower pessimism were also those demonstrated to support healthy ageing. Health-promotion action at the individual level (e.g., smoking cessation or regular physical activity), health professional level (e.g., social prescribing or improving access and quality of care for all older adults), and community level (e.g., opportunities for volunteer work or low-cost social activities for older adults) may imp…
Women and the Labour Party: Gender and the Writing of British Political History
This article takes stock of the state of women's political history in the twentieth century and suggests new lines of enquiry, drawing on the authors’ own work on the Labour Party. It identifies a number of key themes which have enriched histories of women and gender in the nineteenth and early twentieth century and considers how these might be developed. Firstly, it examines the significance of the local, and more particularly, the neighbourhood…
Proposing a Framework for School Food Program Evaluation in Canada
Healthy eating in school-aged children supports optimal growth and learning; however, diet quality and food insecurity are a source of concern for many school-aged children in Canada. Canadian school-aged children’s diets are a concern. In 2019 the Canadian federal government announced the intention to work towards a National School Food Program. A nationally organized program can evolve and meet the needs of children if there is a national evalu…
The Association Between Adolescents’ Food Literacy, Vegetable and Fruit Consumption, and Other Eating Behaviors
Adolescents’ intake of vegetables and fruits is generally low, and many demonstrate unhealthy eating behaviors. Food literacy may be key to improving adolescents’ nutrition. However, the relationship between food literacy, fruit and vegetable intake, and other healthy eating behaviors remains unclear, as well as how these relationships may differ among boys and girls. This study assessed the relationship between food literacy (including food skil…
Investigating the organic residues from the corrosion of a caccabus from Pompeii
A caccabus (a wide-mouthed copper alloy vessel used for cooking) was amongst the objects lent by the Parco Archeologico di Pompeii and exhibited at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford (UK) in 2019. Kept in storage since excavation in the 1950′s, the object’s preparation for display presented an opportunity to investigate organic residues that may be trapped in its corrosion - a material currently commonly removed by conservators during the cleaning pr…
Trajectories of beverage consumption during adolescence
Beverages contribute substantially to daily energy and nutrient intakes. However, little is known about the co-development of beverage consumption throughout adolescence. This study aimed to investigate the presence of naturally occurring sub-groups of girls and boys following distinct trajectories of various types of beverage consumption (i.e. sugary beverages, tea and coffee, water, and milk) throughout adolescence. During the Monitoring Activi…

Dispositional Optimism and All-Cause Mortality in Older Adults: A Cohort Study
OBJECTIVE: Optimism is modifiable and may be associated with healthy aging. We aim to investigate whether dispositional optimism is associated with all-cause mortality in adults 70 years and older. METHODS: Between 2010 and 2014, older adults free of serious cardiovascular disease and dementia were recruited through primary care physicians and enrolled in the Aspirin Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) clinical trial. Australian ASPREE partic…
Impact of economic factors, social health and stressful life events on physical health-related quality of life trajectories in older Australians
Miners’ Bodies and Masculine Identity in Britain, C.1900-1950
The image of the muscular manly mineworker was culturally prevalent in the first half of the twentieth century, and the trope of the hypermasculinity of miners has persisted in popular and scholarly representations. How bodies formed part of the construction of miners’ masculine identities is a crucial but overlooked aspect. This article explores miners’ embodied masculinity at different moments of the lifecycle and within the spaces of home, wor…
Intergenerational Practice in the Community-What Does the Community Think
The many changes that occur in the lives of older people put them at an increased risk of being socially isolated and lonely. Intergenerational programs for older adults and young children can potentially address this shortfall, because of the perceived benefit from generations interacting. This study explores whether there is an appetite in the community for intergenerational programs for community dwelling older adults. An online survey was dis…
Effectiveness of the Healthy Start-Départ Santé approach on physical activity, healthy eating and fundamental movement skills of preschoolers attending childcare centres: A randomized controlled trial

Musculoskeletal Pain Experienced on Most Days is a Common Accompaniment of Ageing amongst Community-Dwelling Older Australians: A Questionnaire-Based Study
Objective: To describe the prevalence, location and impact of moderate to severe pain experienced on most days in community-dwelling older (≥70 years) adults who were ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) clinical trial participants. Methods: Cross-sectional ASPREE Longitudinal Study of Older Persons (ALSOP) data were collected from self-reported questionnaires administered to 16,439 ASPREE participants. Results: Of 14,155 respondent…
Sexual Dimorphism of Resting-State Network Connectivity in Healthy Ageing
Results in this healthy aged cohort are compatible with those obtained in young samples, suggesting that frequency-specific connectivity, and differences between the sexes, are maintained into older age. Our results indicate that sex should be considered as an influencing factor in studies of resting-state connectivity
Labour Activism and the Political Self in Inter-War Working-Class Women’s Politics
This article explores working-class women's experiences of political activism in the Labour Party in the 1930s. The article focuses upon the relationships formed with leaders, the bonds with fellow women, and the emotional fulfilment politics could bring, rather than considering the policies and campaigns which drew women into the party. It suggests how working-class women performed a political self which was shaped by but distinctive from a dome…

Unemployment and the state in Britain: The means test and protest in 1930s south Wales and north-east England
An important and original contribution to understandings of the 1930s. Through a comparative case study of south Wales and the north-east of England, the book explores the impact of the highly controversial means test, the relationship between the unemployed and the government and the nature of some of the largest protests of the interwar period.

The Means Test and the Unemployed in south Wales and the north-east of England, 1931–1939
In November 1931, a household means test was introduced as a requirement for unemployment benefit for those unemployed who had received twenty-six weeks' insurance payments. The test was the most controversial piece of unemployment legislation introduced in the interwar period and it provoked a massive outcry. While many of the larger marches against the Means Test have been explored, there has been little attempt to analyse the wider response to…
The relationship between attitudes, demographic factors and perceived consumption of meats and other proteins in relation to the BSE crisis: A regional study in the United Kingdom
This study investigates changes in perceived consumption, beliefs and attitudes about beef and other proteins over three time periods that included much major media coverage of BSE-related issues. Demographic, consumption frequency of meat and other proteins and attitude scales relating to beef and BSE were administered to a sample of 1065 shoppers as they left a supermarket. Significant changes in most of the consumption measures were found over…
