  • Public opinion on the expenditure of adult-use cannabis tax revenue

    Open Access•Nathan W Link, Jordan M Hyatt et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2024

Recreational cannabis legalization is occurring at a rapid pace, yet important context, including how the tax revenue could be invested in communities, remains unclear. Insight into current public opinion on funding priorities suggests a desire for investment in fundamental societal institutions, including education and public health, rather than the punitive enforcement mechanisms that have defined cannabis policy for many decades

  • The Stress of Injustice

    Open Access•Valerio Baćak, Thomas N Bradbury et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 29

Fairness in the criminal legal system is unattainable without effective legal representation of indigent defendants, yet we know little about the experience of attorneys who do this critical work. Using semi-structured interviews, our study investigated occupational stress in a sample of 78 attorneys representing indigent clients across the United States. We show how the chronic stressors experienced at work culminate in what we define as the str…

  • Assessment of Attitudes Towards Medication-Assisted Drug Treatment Options among an Incarcerated Population

Jordan M Hyatt, Kathleen Powell et al.•ARTICLE•Corrections•2021

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is the state-of-the-art approach to treating opioid use disorder (OUD). Although OUD is prevalent among justice-involved populations, their attitudes toward MAT are largely unknown. Injectable extended release naltrexone (XR-NTX) is a MAT option, that is, unlike others, an opioid antagonist. We assess beliefs about XR-NTX as compared to methadone, a gold-standard pure opioid agonist MAT modality, in a sample of…

  • Who Pays? Measuring Differences in the Process of Repayment of Legal Financial Obligations

    Open Access•Kathleen Powell•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This study identifies the correlates of legal financial obligation (LFO) debt repayment among persons sentenced to probation and transferred to a specialized collections unit. Using bivariate tests and logistic regression, results indicate that starting balance amounts, monthly payment amounts, and enforcement actions (capias warrant) are the strongest influences on the likelihood of full debt repayment. These results indicate that some persons w…

  • Agency-level Perceptions of Monetary Sanctions

    Open Access•Jordan M Hyatt, Jordan Hyatt et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 37

Due to increasing recognition of the collateral consequences associated with monetary sanctions, fees have begun to occupy a prominent place in critical debates. This is especially true for community corrections, where multiple fees are assessed and collected. However, the agency-level perspective has largely been omitted, especially regarding how the current landscape may facilitate-or impede-reform. Using self-report data from a state-wide samp…

  • Distinguishing Petty Offenders from Serious Criminals in the Estimation of Family Life Effects

Open Access•Wakefield, Sara Wakefield et al.•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 43

Prior research on the consequences of imprisonment for the family suggest that incarceration of so-called petty offenders is most harmful for families, yet few studies provide a clear description of who is and is not a petty offender and how best to make such distinctions. We compare various ways of categorizing inmates (using preprison family involvement and characteristics related to criminality and child well-being) to better understand hetero…

  • Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire

Open Access•Karen Rice, Jeongha Hwang et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Social Work•2010•Cited by: 1

This study examined the psychometric properties of the Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire (EBPQ). The 24-item EBPQ was developed to measure health professionals' attitudes toward, knowledge of, and use of evidence-based practice (EBP). A confirmatory factor analysis was performed on the EBPQ given to a random sample of National Association of Social Work members (N = 167). The coefficient alpha of the EBPQ was .93. The study supported a 23-ite…

  • Correlates of Violent and Nonviolent Behavior among Vulnerable Inner- City Youths

    Kathleen Powell, Kathleen B Powell•ARTICLE•Family & Community Health•1997

The purpose of this study was to identify determinants of violent and nonviolent behavior among a group of vulnerable inner-city youths. Students attending schools known to be at high risk for violence (n =521) were administered an anonymous questionnaire. Logistic regression analysis predicted violent behavior from youths who are exposed to violence, are gang members, have family or friends who are gang members, and have peer support. Nonviolent…
