  • Compliance with International Monetary Fund concessional lending policies and economic and social rights fulfillment

Stephen Bagwell, Skip Mark et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Rights•2026

Does compliance with International Monetary Fund (IMF) concessional lending conditions improve or harm the fulfillment of economic and social rights? While existing scholarship examines IMF program participation, the duration of programs, and the number of conditions imposed, compliance remains an underexplored dimension of this literature. We argue that compliance with IMF conditionality will have an overall negative effect on economic and socia…

  • A Brutality-Based Approach to Identifying State-Led Atrocities

Open Access•David Cingranelli, Skip Mark et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 17

The comparative study of atrocities and atrocity prevention faces several obstacles including a lack of consensus on the universe of cases and too few cases to statistically test alternative theories. The brutality-based (BB) conception is based on the idea that widespread, state-led violations of physical integrity rights constitute an assault on the personhood and human dignity of the members of society— a mass atrocity. Applying this idea to a…

  • It’s a Hard-Knock Life

    Open Access•Skip Mark, Huei-Jyun Ye et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2021•Referencias: 29

How does IMF lending impact child labor? We argue that, as compliance with IMF reforms increases, child labor increases. IMF loans can help governments avoid bankruptcy, prevent debt defaults, and credibly signal a commitment to pro-market reforms which should generate trade and investment. However, IMF policies associated with revenue and social policies can have negative impacts on child labor. Education reforms undermine the quality of schooli…

  • Human Rights Violations and Violent Internal Conflict

    Open Access•David Cingranelli, Skip Mark et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2019•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 51

This research project uses econometric methods and comparative, cross-national data to see whether violations of human rights increase the likelihood of the onset or escalation of violent protest, terrorism and/or civil war. The findings show that these types of violent internal conflict will occur and escalate if governments: (1) torture, politically imprison, kill, or "disappear" people, (2) do not allow women to participate fully in the politi…

  • When Killers Become Victims

Efe Tokdemir, Brendan Skip Mark et al.•ARTICLE•International Interactions•2017•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 48

The diversionary theory largely focuses on the incentives leaders have to use force. However, little attention has been given to the characteristics that make for a good target. We argue that US presidents choose targets that repress human rights since they are the easiest to sell to international and domestic audiences. By targeting repressive states US presidents can justify their use of force by cloaking their motivation in the language of hum…
