The Association Between Urbanisation and Household Food Security in Nigeria
A growing number of studies have shown that urbanisation is commonly associated with a change in dietary or consumption patterns towards more expensive and exotic foods. Previous attempts to investigate the implications of urbanisation on household food security have commonly employed dichotomous or binary indicators of urbanisation. Unlike previous studies, we employ satellite-based night-time light intensity data from the US Air Force Defense M…

Chinese Import Competition and Prices: Evidence from India
How do output prices respond to trade shocks? Using detailed firm‐product level data on sales and quantity between 1996 and 2007, we study the causal effect of Chinese import competition on prices for Indian manufacturing firms. We find that Chinese import competition induces a significant decline in firm‐product prices. A 1 percentage point increase in the Chinese import penetration ratio reduces firm‐product prices by 3.5%. Further, this declin…

Children’s Resource Shares: Male Versus Female-Headed Households
This is a comparative study of children’s resource shares in male-headed and female-headed households. To this end we estimate a household collective model using a rotating panel of households from the Jamaican Survey of Living Conditions over a period of 21 years (1990–2010). We find that the gender of the household head is important in determining individual resource shares within the household. Our results also indicate that children receive s…
Marx: A Philosophy of Human Reality
If we are to understand Marx's thought, argues French philosopher Michel Henry, we must cast aside Marxism. In his original and richly detailed study of Marx's philosophy, Henry emphasizes the importance of approaching Marx's writings directly, rather than through the intermediary of subsequent interpretations, which often have been politically motivated. In contrast to the usual depiction of Marxian thought as an economically oriented analysis o…
Exploring attributions of causality for child undernutrition: Qualitative analysis in Lusaka, Zambia
Child undernutrition is responsible for 45% of all under-five deaths in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and numerous morbidities. Although progress has been made, high levels of child undernutrition persist in Zambia. Existing studies have explored primary caretakers' (PCs) explanatory models of child undernutrition in LMICs, without comparison with those of health care providers (HCPs). This paper examines and compares the perceived cau…

Grant Support and Exporting Activity
This paper investigates whether government support can act to increase exporting activity. We use a uniquely rich data set on Irish manufacturing plants and employ an empirical strategy that combines a nonparametric matching procedure with a difference-in-differences estimator in order to deal with the potential selection problem inherent in the analysis. Our results suggest that if grants are large enough, they can encourage already exporting fi…

A Topical Approach to Nineteenth Century American History
Survey courses in American history can quickly become stale for both teach ers and students. Since the basic con tent of American history changes slowly and is almost static, many teachers pre sent the same material in the same order year in and year out. While some vari ety is possible, many teachers fall into ruts that can result in uninspiring and boring classes for both teachers and students. A solution to this dilemma is to change the course…
Compulsory Sterilization in India: Is Coercion the Only Alternative to Chaos
Compulsory sterilization, where jail sentences will be imposed on couples if both partners remain unsterilized after the birth of their 3rd child, will be introduced in India, and it is thought that such a program will fail. Indian officials justify compulsory sterilization on the grounds that the country's survival is at stake. This argument, however, is not self-evident. Coercion entails potential moral and political consequences. Preliminary e…
