  • Variability in the Grades Teachers Give

Open Access•Richard Mckenzie, Roy McKenzie et al.•ARTICLE•American Educational Research…•2025•References: 25

We identify systematic differences in ninth-grade teachers’ effects on students’ course grades in their class (ninth-grade grade value-add), their persistent effects on students’ grades in the same subject of the next grade (tenth-grade grade value-add, representing effectiveness at academic preparation), and mismatch between the grades they give and students’ subsequent performance (representing inaccurate measurement). Persistent effects and mi…

  • Ozone depletion, ultraviolet radiation, climate change and prospects for a sustainable future

  • The South, Slavery, and Competition in Early US House Elections

    Open Access•Frank C Thames, Frank Thames et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science History•2018•References: 36

In this study of the early US Congress (First through Nineteenth: 1789–1827), we assess the impact of slavery on the electoral competitiveness of House elections. Slavery and other forms of labor repressive agriculture have long been known to undermine democracy. Using district-level measures of electoral competitiveness and slavery, we find that a higher percentage of slaves in a district negatively impacts competition, even when we limit our mo…

  • Attempts to Probe the Ozone Layer and the Ultraviolet-B Levels of the Past

Lars Olof Björn, Richard Mckenzie et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2007•References: 69

To get a proper perspective on the current status of atmospheric ozone, which protects the biosphere from ultraviolet-B (UV-B; 280-315 nm) radiation, it would be of value to know how ozone and UV-B radiation have varied in the past. The record of worldwide ozone monitoring goes back only a few decades, and the record of reliable UV-B measurements is even shorter. Here we review indirect methods to assess their status further back in time. These i…
