  • Multi-proxy evidence for woodland clearance in northeast Northumberland (England) during the Iron Age

    Open Access•Eline N van Asperen, Jason R Kirby et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2023•References: 7

Pollen diagrams covering the Bronze Age to Roman period from northeast Northumberland are scarce. We present a 14 C-dated pollen record from a peat-filled forest hollow in Chillingham Wild Cattle Park, northeast Northumberland, that spans the Iron Age. For the first time for this part of Northumberland, fungal spores are also analysed to investigate whether clearances took place in the context of crop cultivation or pastoralism. The pollen diagra…

  • Relating dung fungal spore influx rates to animal density in a temperate environment

    Open Access•Eline N van Asperen, Jason R Kirby et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 21

The management of the remainder of Europe’s once extensive forests is hampered by a poor understanding of the character of the vegetation and drivers of change before the onset of clearance for farming. Pollen data indicate a closed-canopy, mixed-deciduous forest, contrasting with the assertion that large herbivores would have maintained a mosaic of open grassland, regenerating scrub and forested groves. Coprophilous fungal spores from sedimentar…

  • Mainstreaming Leader Delivery of the RDR in Cumbria

    Open Access•Ian Convery, Ian Soane et al.•ARTICLE•Sociologia Ruralis•2010•Cited by: 6•References: 21

The European Union (EU) Rural Development Regulations (RDR) provide the blueprint for EU rural development policy. A major change with the 2007–2013 funding period has been the decision to mainstream the LEADER programme as a cross-cutting axis for the local delivery of rural development. Delivery of the RDR in England (via the Rural Development Plan for England) has been devolved to the regions, and in the north-west there has been further sub-r…

Digital radio reached its tenth birthday in 2005. However, anniversary celebrations have been rather muted. In contrast with digital television, where audience awareness levels are high and adoption rates similar, digital radio’s penetration into the marketplace has been minimal. Even when people have heard of digital radio, survey data shows that very few feel knowledgeable about it. Nevertheless, most broadcasters and most governments believe t…
