Earth observation: An integral part of a smart and sustainable city
Over the course of the 21st century, a century in which the urbanization process of the previous one is ever on the rise, the novel smart city concept has rapidly evolved and now encompasses the broader aspect of sustainability. Concurrently, there has been a sea change in the domain of Earth observation (EO) where scientific and technological breakthroughs are accompanied by a paradigm shift in the provision of open and free data. While the urba…
Indicating sustainable salmon farming: The case of the new Norwegian aquaculture management scheme
Norway, the world's leader in the production and export of farmed Atlantic salmon, recently established a new management regime with a view to promoting substantial long-term growth in the industry. The government stated plainly, however, that the industry would have to be environmentally sustainable. The determination would be made through the use of indicators, but only one indicator would go into effect as the new regime was instituted: the am…
Mapping actors and arguments in the Norwegian aquaculture debate
Norway is the world's leader in the production and export of farmed Atlantic salmon, and authorities there recently established a new management regime for the industry with a view to promoting substantial long-term growth in the industry. The decision by the government suggests broad acceptance for the industry in Norway, but there have been some danger signs with respect to the industry's social acceptance. This paper examines the comments subm…
Blooming Beautifully: Emerging Tools for Religious Education
This paper highlights two emerging models for how religious education is evolving in new venues to reach new audiences today. The first is an online course that equips a new generation of chaplains to accompany community organizers and activists on the front lines of social change by providing spiritual and emotional support. The second is literally a meal, the People’s Supper, introduced through the transcript of a podcast interview. Both the po…
The operationalisation of sustainability: Sustainable aquaculture production as defined by certification schemes
Sustainability certification has become an increasingly important feature in aquaculture production, leading to a multitude of schemes with various criteria. However, the large number of schemes and the complexity of the standards creates confusion with respect to which sustainability objectives are targeted. As a result, what is meant by ‘sustainability’ is unclear. In this paper, we examine the operationalisation of the concept from the vantage…
What and who is an Antarctic ambassador
The term “Antarctic ambassadorship” is increasingly used to represent an individual’s connection to Antarctica and their subsequent advocacy. However, there is little clarity regarding the concept. To address this, we combined a literature review with an expert elicitation workshop. We argue that (i) the concept of Antarctic ambassador has been understood in myriad ways; (ii) Antarctic ambassadors have a connection to, knowledge of and passion fo…

HIV and STI knowledge, testing, and risk among adult crack users in Mexico city: Baseline findings from a feasibility study
Recent research has documented crack cocaine's increasing spread in Mexico, which is likely to contribute to the rapid transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In Mexico, crack use is increasing most rapidly in vulnerable, hard-to-reach populations, where little is known about risk behaviors. This report aims to present baseline data regarding HIV and STI knowledge and testing prevalence from an innovative projection …
Enhancing Interprofessional Education: Integrating Public Health and Social Work Perspectives
National stakeholders in health system improvement and patient safety including accreditation bodies have requested health professional educational programs to include multiple interprofessional experiences through didactic and experiential opportunities. Clinical and population health faculty at the University of South Carolina redesigned and expanded an introductory interprofessional course to include more than 500 students from public health, …
Fundamentalism in the Modern World: Fundamentalism, Politics and History: The State, Globalisation and Political Ideologies
How does religious fundamentalism operate in modern global society? This two-volume series analyses the dynamics of fundamentalism and its relationship to the modern state, the public sphere and globalisation. In this first volume, fundamentalism is approached from the perspective of state and community building, ideology and practices within the context of global society, and the ways in which fundamentalism is intertwined with issues of politic…
Analysis of an innovative survey platform: Comparison of the public’s responses to human health and salmon genomics surveys
This paper presents the results of the first two surveys conducted using the innovative NERD (Norms Evolving in Response to Dilemmas) platform. The structure, results, and analysis of the first two NERD surveys on genomics and human health and salmon genomics are compared. This comparison demonstrates that NERD is a cost-effective and efficient public consultation and experimental tool that has provided insight on public acceptance of new technol…
Midwiving the Spirit: Religious Diversity and Professional Midwifery in Southern Ontario
Based on my case study of a metropolitan clinic in Southern Ontario, I argue that Ontario midwives are able to meet the needs of religiously and culturally diverse populations. A sizeable majority of study participants embraced diverse religious or spiritual practices and stated that these were complimented by midwifery care. While some clients reported a perception that midwives were willing to accept religious or spiritual perspectives as legit…

Arrested Development: The Fight to End Commercial Whaling as a Case of Failed Norm Change
The International Whaling Commission's moratorium on commercial whaling took effect in 1986, seemingly marking the adoption of a new norm, that commercial whaling was no longer acceptable. But this norm has failed to become institutionalized. This article uses the norm life-cycle approach as developed by Finnemore and Sikkink (1998) to account for this failure. The effort ran aground because the norm proved unexpectedly ambiguous, a supporting ep…

Over the Hill? The Anatomy of Revolution at Fifty
Crane Brinton's famous Anatomy of Revolution marks a watershed in the study of revolution. This essay celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the book's publication. It discusses some of the reasons for the remarkable longevity of Brinton's study; it traces Brinton's influence through three generations of American students of revolution; and it suggests a new research agenda for the coming generation based on a re-examination of the concepts of `f…
Female Nature and the Nature of the Female: A Re-vision of Sarah Orne Jewett’s The Country of the Pointed Firs
