Development and application of a pollen-based paleohydrologic reconstruction from the Lower Roanoke River Basin, North Carolina, USA
We used pollen assemblages to reconstruct late-Holocene paleohydrologic patterns in floodplain deposits from the lower Roanoke River basin (North Carolina, southeastern USA). Using 120 surface samples from 38 transects, we documented statistical relationships between pollen assemblages, vegetation, and landforms. Comparison of permafrost conditions in Canada and the USSR
Canada and the USSR together possess most of the territory in the Northern Hemisphere underlain by permafrost or perennially frozen ground. As about one half of the land area of each country is affected, the permafrost region of the Soviet Union is 21⁄2 times larger than that of Canada. Reports investigations of the thawing effect of water on permafrost in northern Mackenzie District during Apr 1961. Holes were drilled under the center of a small, shallow lake with a mean bottom temperature higher than 32 degrees F and at various distances to the west of the lake. John Aito Pihlainen (1926-1964)
John Aito Pihlainen, civil engineer and a Fellow of the Arctic Institute since 1960, died suddenly in Ottawa in January of this year. He was born in Finland and emigrated to Canada with his parents in 1928. In 1950 he obtained his B.Eng. degree at McGill University and his M.Sc. at Purdue University two years later. He joined the Division of Building Research of the National Research Council in 1950 and pioneered the Division's investigations of …

Permafrost is a widespread phenomenon in the northern parts of North America and Eurasia, and in Antarctica. Between 40 and 50 per cent of Canada's total land surface of 3.8 million square miles is underlain by permafrost. The total land area of the U.S.S.R. exceeds 8 million square miles of which 47 per cent is underlain by permafrost (Tsytovich 1958).
