The effects of rape myth pornography on women's attitudes and the mediating role of sex role stereotyping
Ingroup Bias as a Function of Competition and Race
The present experiment investigated factors that enhance the salience of group membership and consequent ingroup bias. Subject dyads, who were always white, were either competitive or interdependent with either white or black confederate dyads. Ingroup bias was assessed as a function of attraction toward the outgroup (experimental confederates) relative to the ingroup (naive subjects). The greater the difference between ingroup and outgroup attra…
Disclosure reciprocity and liking as a function of gender and personalism
Self-Disclosure as a Function of Reward-Cost Outcomes
Fifty-six sailors individually participated in a lengthy interaction session, ostensibly with another sailor (an experimenter confederate). They were subjected to one of four reward/cost interaction histories (Continuous Positive, Later Positive, Continuous Negative, and Later Negative). In addition, Ss expected to be in either a long-term or short-term relationship with their partner (Non-Withdrawal or Withdrawal). Disclosure measures included a…
Effects of viewed violence and aggression
Tests of the catharsis hypothesis involving viewed violence have led to conflicting results. It was suggested that the inconsistencies were due in part to the use of two different types of response measures, aggressive responses and hostile responses. This study involved a direct comparison of the two types of responses under conditions of instigation versus no instigation and aggressive versus neutral film. It was hypothesized that viewing an ag…
Self-disclosure in isolated groups
Interpersonal exchange as a function of rewards and costs and situational factors
Stress relations in socially isolated groups
Intimacy-Scaled Stimuli for Use in Studies of Interpersonal Relations
Psychometric materials for use in research on interpersonal exchange and self-disclosure included 671 statements about various aspects of the self which people might discuss as they form interpersonal relationships with others. Items were scaled for “intimacy” and topical category by judges from two different populations. From equal-appearing interval analysis were obtained intimacy scale values and Q-scores. Pearson product-moment correlations s…
The Relationship Between Authoritarianism and Ethnocentrism in Negro College Students
One landmark of a great study is the amount of interest and controversy that it inspires. The Kinsey Report (5) and The American Dilemma (6) are two cases in point. Similar to these two studies, in prestige and influence, is The Authoritarian Personality (1). A major tribute to its vitality is that it has inspired such a tremendous volume of research (7). Initially, the study was conducted as an investigation of anti-Semitic attitudes, but was la…
