  • The Cost of Coronavirus Obligations

    Open Access•David Shaw, David M Shaw•ARTICLE•Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare…•2021

We all now know that the novel coronavirus is anything but a common cold. The pandemic has created many new obligations for all of us, several of which come with serious costs to our quality of life. But in some cases, the guidance and the law are open to a degree of interpretation, leaving us to decide what is the ethical (or unethical but desired) course of action. Because of the high cost of some of the obligations, a conflict of interest can …

  • Restoring a Hemorrhaged Identity

David Shaw, David M Shaw•ARTICLE•Bulletin for Biblical Research•2020

The hemorrhaging woman of Luke 8 (and Mark 5) is almost universally presumed to be of Jewish origin, but there are clues in the Gospel accounts and other primary sources to suggest that she may be a Gentile. On this understanding, her healing signals the fulfillment of Jesus’s words in Nazareth (Luke 4:16–30), as extension of God’s mission to the Gentiles. Moreover, her faith acts as a model for both Jairus and the early church, consequently subv…

  • Called to Bless

    Open Access•David Shaw, David M Shaw•ARTICLE•Biblical Theology Bulletin…•2020

This article investigates the notion of mission as blessing in 1 Peter 3:8–17. Drawing on insights from both Social Identity Theory (SIT) and Narrative Transportation Theory (NTT), I consider how the use of Old Testament quotations and allusions are deployed in such a way as to subvert normal social identity processes by exhorting the recipients of 1 Peter to pursue a life oriented towards blessing one’s opponents through the refusal to retaliate…

  • Allonymous science

Open Access•Bart Penders, Peter Lutz et al.•ARTICLE•Life Sciences Society and Policy•2020•References: 44

Ideally, guidelines reflect an accepted position with respect to matters of concern, ranging from clinical practices to researcher behaviour. Upon close reading, authorship guidelines reserve authorship attribution to individuals fully or almost fully embedded in particular studies, including design or execution as well as significant involvement in the writing process. These requirements prescribe an organisation of scientific work in which this…

  • Assisted suicide for prisoners? Stakeholder and prisoner perspectives

David Shaw, David M Shaw et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•2016•Cited by: 3

For a wider project on aging in prison, the authors interviewed 35 older prisoners and 24 stakeholders (prison staff, prison healthcare professionals, and policy makers) about healthcare for prisoners. In all, 6 prisoners and 3 stakeholders spontaneously expressed their attitudes concerning assisted suicide. Some prisoners seek assisted suicide for medical reasons and others because they regard spending the rest of their lives in prison as undign…

  • Prioritising Healthcare Workers for E bola Treatment

Open Access•Priya Satalkar, Bernice S Elger et al.•ARTICLE•Developing World Bioethics•2015

The E bola epidemic in W estern A frica has highlighted issues related to weak health systems, the politics of drug and vaccine development and the need for transparent and ethical criteria for use of scarce local and global resources during public health emergency. In this paper we explore two key themes. First, we argue that independent of any use of experimental drugs or vaccine interventions, simultaneous implementation of proven public healt…

James P Mchale, Penelope G Vinden et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Sport Journal•2005•Cited by: 14

This article examines patterns of adjustment among urban middle-school children as a function of involvement in organized team sports. Four hundred twenty-three seventh-grade students (216 boys and 207 girls) reported on their involvement in sport, self-esteem, delinquent activity, and drug use during the year preceding the survey. Physical Education teachers rated social competence, shyness/withdrawal, and disinhibition/aggression. Compared with…

  • A Thermodynamic Study of Arctic Paleoclimatology

    Open Access•David M Shaw, William L Donn•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1971

The thermodynamic model of J. Adem has been applied to the determination of Arctic and hemispheric surface temperatures with both ice-covered and ice-free states of the Arctic Ocean. The effect of glaciated and nonglaciated continents is included in the investigation. With an ice cover over the Arctic, as at present, computed temperatures for the polar sea and the Northern Hemisphere correspond closely with present observations. Over a broad rang…

  • Internalization of a Moral Norm and External Supports

    Open Access•David Shaw, David M Shaw et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1962•References: 6

A growing theoretical and empirical literature in recent years is concerned with the problems of conformity and deviance in modern society.' This literature supports the position that such loosely descriptive concepts as the folkways and the mores are in themselves inadequate as an approach to the study of social control; the normative structure of our society is simply too heterogeneous. Though we can demonstrate reliable differences in value sy…
