Did mathematics achievement gaps for students with disabilities widen after the introduction of the Common Core and its aligned assessments
This study addresses the important yet underexplored question of whether the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics, first introduced in the United States in 2009 and which emphasize critical thinking and problem‐solving, as well as the computer‐based assessments aligned with the Common Core, have facilitated or hindered learning for students with disabilities. By analysing administrative data from a large county in California, we track mathe…
Outliers for equity: Choosing (and not choosing) college preparation in California’s Riverside County
Some schools prepare more of their students to succeed in college than others. This case study in Riverside County seeks to identify high schools that are outliers in college outcomes and illuminate processes that might encourage or discourage college enrollment and persistence. Leveraging the theory of loose coupling and interviews of educators in outlier schools, findings suggest that schools frame college readiness differently, and constraints…

Extended Reconstructed Sea Surface Temperature, Version 5 (ERSSTv5): Upgrades, Validations, and Intercomparisons
The monthly global 2° × 2° Extended Reconstructed Sea Surface Temperature (ERSST) has been revised and updated from version 4 to version 5. This update incorporates a new release of ICOADS release 3.0 (R3.0), a decade of near-surface data from Argo floats, and a new estimate of centennial sea ice from HadISST2. A number of choices in aspects of quality control, bias adjustment, and interpolation have been substantively revised. The resulting ERSS…
Easy in, Easy out: Are Alternatively Certified Teachers Turning Over at Increased Rates
Alternative certification programs are now commonplace in the credentialing of new teachers. We complement the growing evidence base for these teachers by exploring their turnover patterns in four waves of the nationally representative Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS). We report on descriptive evidence of growing differences in the characteristics of alternatively and traditionally certified teachers and the schools in which they teach. Control…
Selecting Expertise in Context: Middle School Mathematics Teachers’ Selection of New Sources of Instructional Advice
Given prior research indicating that teachers can learn through their social network interactions with colleagues, it is important to understand more about the choices teachers make about whom to go to for advice. In this study, we investigated the degree to which middle school mathematics teachers change from whom they seek advice when confronting new teaching standards and external accountability pressures (e.g., standardized tests). We found t…

Evaluating Math Recovery: Assessing the Causal Impact of a Diagnostic Tutoring Program on Student Achievement
Mathematics Recovery (MR) is designed to identify first graders who are struggling in mathematics and provide them with intensive one-to-one tutoring. We report findings from a 2-year evaluation of MR conducted in 20 elementary schools across five districts in two states. The design allowed for the estimation of the counterfactual growth trajectory based on those students randomly assigned either to a tutoring cohort with a delayed start or to a …
The observed sensitivity of the global hydrological cycle to changes in surface temperature
Climate models project large changes in global surface temperature in coming decades that are expected to be accompanied by significant changes in the global hydrological cycle. Validation of model simulations is essential to support their use in decision making, but observing the elements of the hydrological cycle is challenging, and model-independent global data sets exist only for precipitation. We compute the sensitivity of the global hydrolo…

The Impact of Government Funding on Private Contributions to Nonprofit Performing Arts Organizations
This paper tests the crowding‐out hypothesis for a balanced panel of nonprofit performing arts organizations between 1998 and 2003. This research uses a number of model specifications and estimating techniques to appropriately capture the relationship between government grants and private donations. Under alternative specifications, the relationship between government grants and private donations suggests crowding‐in between $0.14 and $1.15. The …
How Do State‐Level Induction and Standards‐Based Reform Policies Affect Induction Experiences and Turnover among New Teachers
Since the early 1980s, states have been increasingly active in setting policies that structure the initiation or “induction” of new teachers into teaching. This article uses the Schools and Staffing Survey merged with state‐level data collected for Education Week's “Quality Counts” reports to examine the impact of state policy on beginning teacher turnover. States that mandate participation in induction programs tend to have more beginning teache…
Qualifications and Assignments of Alternatively Certified Teachers: Testing Core Assumptions
By analyzing data from the Schools and Staffing Survey, the authors empirically test four of the core assumptions embedded in current arguments for expanding alternative teacher certification (AC): AC attracts experienced candidates from fields outside of education; AC attracts top-quality, well-trained teachers; AC disproportionately trains teachers to teach in hard-to-staff schools; and AC alleviates out-of-field teaching. Although there are so…
Democratic School Climate and Sense of Community in School: A Multilevel Analysis
This study examines individual- and school-level predictors of sense of community in school among adolescents. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to examine the relationships between individual (demographics, control and monitoring by parents, and perception of democratic school climate), class, and school characteristics (mean democratic school climate, demographics, activities, school size, public/private governance of the school, and facili…
Assessing Barriers to the Reform of U.S. Mathematics Instruction From an International Perspective
The authors assessed five commonly perceived barriers to increased use of conceptual teaching in mathematics in the United States related to teacher autonomy, trade-offs with computational strategies, student achievement, class size, and teacher qualifications. These barriers were examined through the use of data from nationally representative samples of eighth-grade mathematics classrooms across 38 nations that took part in the Third Internation…
Do Teacher Induction and Mentoring Matter?
In recent years there has been a growing interest in support, guidance, and orientation programs-collectively known as induction-for beginning elementary and secondary teachers during the transition into their first teaching jobs. This study examines whether such supports have a positive effect on the retention of beginning teachers. The study alsofocuses on different types and components of induction, including mentoring programs, collective gro…
Curricular Reform in Mathematics and Science Since A Nation at Risk
Concerns about both the content and lack of focus of the U.S. mathematics and science curriculum, both as it is stated in state-level curricular frameworks and how it is implemented in the classroom, have appeared in major studies since the early 1980s (National Center for Education Statistics [NCES], 2000a). In 1983, the National Commission on Excellence in Education (NCEE) concluded in A Nation at Risk (NAR) that the curricular smorgasbord then…
What Are the Effects of Induction and Mentoring on Beginning Teacher Turnover
In recent years there has been an increase in the number of programs offering support, guidance, and orientation for beginning teachers during the transition into their first teaching job. This study examines whether such programs—collectively known as induction—have a positive effect on the retention of beginning teachers. The data used in the analysis are from the nationally representative 1999–2000 Schools and Staffing Survey. The results indi…
Worldwide Growth and Institutionalization of Statistical Indicators for Education Policy-Making
The use of widely published statistical indicators (also referred to as social indicators when outside the purely economic realm) on the condition of national education systems has in recent decades become a standard part of the policy-making process throughout the world. Uniquely different from the usual policy-related statistical analysis, statistical indicators are derived measures, often combining multiple data sources and several statistics …

From Whirlwind to Mitre: The R&D Story of The Sage Air Defense Computer (History of Computing)
Redmond and Smith reveal how the development of a continent-wide advance warning system against attack by missiles and manned aircraft set the stage for 1960's computing development. SAGE's design introduced concepts related to mass data processing that would later make personal and business computing a reality.
