Development Without Justice
The Hasdeo Arand dispute in Chhattisgarh poses a contradiction in India’s development trajectory in Adivasi regions. The resource-rich Adivasi areas are treated as sites of growth, whereas their original inhabitants bear its ecological and cultural costs. In this article, Hasdeo is treated not as a conflict over coal mining or environmental loss, but as an ongoing conflict of developmental imperatives versus constitutional justice. This article a…
Evaluating webinar effectiveness in post Covid digital learning
Introduction As digital technologies continue to impact our education system, webinars have become an essential way to deliver timely, scalable training, especially in the post-COVID era. Despite widespread use, we still know relatively little about how effective webinars are especially in the field of agricultural education and extension. This study aims to fill that gap by exploring how socio-economic, personal, and learning-related factors sha…
Unveiling barriers and prioritizing strategies for empowerment of Oraon tribal women through multi-criteria decision analysis
Introduction: Tribal women play a vital role in their communities, often managing both economic and domestic responsibilities. Despite the growing feminization of agriculture in India, women continue to face multifaceted challenges in accessing and controlling resources, exercising agency, and technological advancements, which collectively impede their empowerment and the achievement of SDG 5. These constraints are more pronounced among Oraon tri…
The Fragrant Legacy
This article explores the rich cultural heritage and artisanal craftsmanship of ittar-making in Kannauj, India. Rooted in centuries-old traditions, Kannauj’s ittar-making practices have been passed down through generations, maintaining the purity of natural perfume production through traditional methods like the ‘deg-bhapka’ distillation technique. The study emphasizes the importance of craftsmanship, as described by Richard Sennett, in which mas…
Role of Micro‐innovation in Technology Adoption
In the 18th century, the East India Company introduced Italian filature technology to the silk‐reeling industry in the Indian province of Bengal in order to produce silk suitable for the European market. The experiment failed in Bengal despite its superiority over the traditional method and eventually moved to Japan in the late 19th century, where it was successfully adopted. In this paper, drawing on the Japanese case, we examine the reasons beh…
Motherhood and Labour Market Penalty
The labour market penalty associated with motherhood is an important issue related to gender inequality in society. Our article is an attempt to empirically examine the extent of the ‘motherhood penalty’ in the context of the Indian labour market. We use longitudinal survey data from India to address this question. Using different measures of motherhood, we find that labour market outcomes are negatively associated with motherhood. But the result…
The Evicted Tribals of Chhattisgarh
The Hasdeo Arand is a tribal-dominated region of Chhattisgarh, with heavy coal reserves and rich biodiversity with many rare species of flora and fauna. Despite being declared a Scheduled Area for its ecological sensitivity, two coal mining projects were approved in the region in 2011, and it had a devastating impact on the forest ecosystem, leading to a loss of livelihood, culture and identity of the local tribes. This article analyses the displ…

Land Acquisition, Markets and Political Networks
In recent times, land acquisitions in India for both public and private projects are facing stiff political resistance. Existing studies on land acquisition mostly focus on optimal compensation that would secure the consent of land owners. In this article, we argue that besides compensation, membership in different types of networks such as political parties and self-help groups might influence landowner consent. This could occur either because o…
Assimilation and symbolic ethnicity through the class-ethnicity nexus
Based on the empirical study of the immigrant Bengali community in the Kansas City U.S.A., the paper examines the assimilation and intergenerational dynamics of second-generation immigrants. The study finds that transnational parents could not socialise their children to retain their ethnic orientation and the second generation are found to be assimilating faster into the American culture. We argue that consumption of ethnic goods and services by…
Assimilation, Heterolocalism and Ethnic Capital
The article examines the assimilation dynamics and functioning of ethnic organisations of a small immigrant Bengali community in the Kansas City, USA. Indian Bengalis in Overland Park (a suburban neighbourhood) formed a closely knit group and bonding social capital was sustained through activities of ethnic associations, consumption of ethnic amenities, and through weekend parties/get-togethers. Such ethnic bonding and meagre ethnic/racial divers…
Stigma of sexual violence and women’s decision to work
Transition of Credit Organizations
This paper looks at the evolution of business practice of indigenous banking groups in colonial India. Specifically, it studies why in the early twentieth century, the Indian banking caste Nattukottai Chettiar moved from caste-based banking to joint stock banking. The paper argues that caste-based banking had two advantages over joint stock banking—caste-based monitoring of agents and reciprocity-based informal insurance within the caste. In the …
