The Poetry of Loss: Romantic and Contemporary Elegies
The Poetry of Loss: Romantic and Contemporary Elegies presents a renewed look at elegy as a long-standing tradition in the literature of loss, exploring recent shifts in the continuum of these memorial poems. This volume investigates the tensions arising in elegiac formulations of grief through detailed analyses of seminal poets, including Wordsworth, Keats, and Plath, using psychoanalytic precepts to reconceptualize consolation through poetic st…
Maintaining Connections: An Exploratory Analysis of the Predictors of Prison Visitation with Children and the Post-Release Plans of Incarcerated Mothers
Parental incarceration has been found to negatively impact families and communities. This study examined characteristics that impact receiving in-person visits among a sample of incarcerated mothers of minor children in a large Southern prison system. Factors impacting post release plans to live with children were also examined. Contact with their children, race/ethnicity, offense type, previous incarceration, and sentence length predicted whethe…
The literature of loss: Elegy writing as a therapeutic strategy for coping with grief
Grief scholars have concurred that continuing bonds with the deceased represent normal adaptive behaviour in the face of loss, and numerous researchers have stressed the therapeutic benefits of writing through trauma; however, few have interrogated the potential therapeutic effects specific to elegy writing, which offers robust opportunities to express and transfigure grief through imagery and recollection. This research reveals the role of elegy…

Serious about Change: A Gendered Examination of the Impact of Offense Type on Parole Success
Female offender populations are growing at an unprecedented rate. The present study examines gender differences among a large sample of male and female offenders as related to seriousness of their offense and success on parole. Data analyzed were originally collected from a random sample of parole case files in California. Results revealed that although gender does significantly impact parole success, seriousness of the offense does not. Other si…
Tax abatement reporting: Perspectives of users and preparers
Using tax abatements to spur economic development can be controversial. The potential benefits are stressed when abatements are granted, but subsequent reporting may be insufficient for citizens to hold governments accountable for actual results. We solicited perspectives on tax abatements from three user groups (citizens representing advocacy groups, county board members, and financial analysts) and county officials involved in financial reporti…
Performance reporting: Assessing citizen access to performance measures on state government websites
Performance measurement is common in state and local governments. However, having a performance measurement system does not guarantee that results are shared with the citizenry. This study evaluates the relative accessibility of performance information on state government websites. Drawing upon the e-government and bureaucratic paradigms developed by Ho (2002), we find that state governments are more likely to approach reporting of performance in…
Living with The Red Book: Judith Harris Interviews Sonu Shamdasani
The author interviewed Sonu Shamdasani, the editor of Jung’s The Red Book, shortly before publication of The Red Book to worldwide acclaim. Sonu Shamdasani details his almost life-long interest in Jung and the thirteen-year process of working on The Red Book. He makes a telling point that Jung began his personal confrontation with the unconscious before not after the break with Freud in 1913 and discusses the many layers of Jung’s fifteen years o…
Pompeii Awakened: A Story of Rediscovery
Awakened tells of the re-emergence in 1755 of an evocative, vanished world, which profoundly inspired a later age - from its arts and architecture to its science, sex and religion. The story of Pompeii lies not just in its uniquely preserved classical remains but also in its extraordinary impact on Europe's cultural imagination. Judith Harris brings the doomed city vibrantly to life. In her rich account of those who sifted through its artefacts, …
