  • Damascus and the Region Fourth Century bc–Eighth Century ad

    Ross Burns•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of the…•2025

For a thousand years, Damascus played a central role in the consolidation in Syria of the dominant culture of the Mediterranean world. Though of largely Aramaean extraction, Damascene society reflected the influence of Greek and later Roman civilization without losing numerous elements of its Semitic past. The pivotal role of the city in the consolidation of Greek and Roman rule in southern Syria continued into Byzantine times when Syria played a…

  • Weaponizing monuments

    Open Access•Ross Burns•ARTICLE•International Review of the Red…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 2

  • A Roman monumental building in south-east Damascus?

    Elizabeth Macaulay-Lewis, Ross Burns•ARTICLE•Levant•2015

The wall appears to be oriented to the Roman grid. The discovery of walls of a possible Roman monumental structure raises several important questions about the topography of this poorly understood part of ancient Damascus. This paper discu…

  • Beyond cricket and rugby

    Ross Burns•ARTICLE•South African Journal of…•1994

Relations between Australia and South Africa have sometimes been depicted in adversarial terms, analogously with the most crudely partisan representations of sporting competition between the two countries. There is a real need to get beyond this model of the relationship and to seize the opportunities for co‐operation. South Africa also has much to learn form the example of Australia's restructuring of its economy in the 1980s, especially in the …
