Does the class composition matter? Social and immigrant class composition in compulsory school and the trajectory to upper-secondary education in Germany and Switzerland
Drawing on survey data from Germany and German-speaking Switzerland, we examine whether the class composition at lower-secondary level—in particular, the proportion of low-SES and immigrant students—is associated with students’ trajectories to post-compulsory education, using linear probability models. By focusing on two tracked education systems, our study extends the existing research, which primarily examines comprehensive education systems. O…
Breaking Barriers? Social Inequality in Pathways to Higher Education Between General and Vocational Schools in Germany
Pathways to higher education through vocational upper secondary schools (VUSSs) are intended to increase permeability. However, in both VUSSs and general upper secondary schools (GUSSs), participation is socially selective. This article examined differences between GUSS and VUSS students in (a) the attainment of a higher education entrance qualification (HEEQ) and (b) the subsequent transition to higher education. Taking entry selectivity into ac…
How immigrant optimism shapes educational transitions over the educational life course–Empirical evidence from Germany
Compared to natives, young adults with an immigrant background are more likely to choose academic education over vocational education and training (VET). Our study investigates ethnic choice effects at different stages of the educational system. Based on longitudinal data from the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), we found that immigrant youths–when controlling for achievement and social background–were more likely to attend academi…
