Traditions in Artistic Craft of Mesopotamia and Anatolia
This paper presents a study of items of artistic craft in the Near East dating from the IV– III millennium BC. The discussed artifacts mirror the material and spiritual culture of the ancient population, the social structure at different stages, and the level of production development. The author focuses on the products with decorative coatings and inlays from archaeological sites of two historically and culturally related regions — Mesopotamia a…
Thou Settest a Crown of Pure Gold on His Head
The study focuses on metal details of headdresses of the Early Metals period (V—III mill. BC) from the Middle Eastern sites of the Late Chalcolithic and Bronze Age. The paper aims at clarifying the place and role of this group of material in development of social relations in the epochs of late prehistory and formation of early urban and early state societies. The author applies the comparative typological method and presents an overview of metal…
On the Construction Features of Wheeled Vehicles in Iran and Mesopotamia (Third to First Millennia Bc)
Reinforcing metal elements in early Eurasian wheels are described. A typology of wheel constructions is proposed, and stages of their evolution and diffusion in socially and ethnically diverse societies are reconstructed. In Sumer and southwestern Iran, early (3d millennium BC) evidence of the use of wheeled transport includes remains of wagons in burials, representations on vessels and cylinder seals, as well as clay and metal models. The early …
Models of Metal Production in the Near East
The article focuses on the comparative analysis of regional models of early metal production in the Near East (Anatolia, Mesopotamia, the Levant, and Iran) in the 5th – early 2nd millennia BC. The study is based on the statistical analysis of computer databases on ancient copper/bronze, gold, silver, and lead artifacts, compiled by the author. Four criteria are suggested for characterizing the regional models of metal production: production dynam…
