  • A drastic change in glacial dynamics at the beginning of the seventeenth century on Novaya Zemlya coincides in time with the strongest volcanic eruption in Peru and the Great Famine in Russia

    Open Access•V Yu Rusakov, Тat'yana Kuz'mina et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

In this study, we reconstructed for the first time the recent 1000-yr-long history of Goluboi tidewater glacier at the eastern side of the Novaya Zemlya, Kara Sea, based on accelerator mass spectrometry 14 C dating with higher-resolution age control on the basis of 210 Pb and 137 Cs radionuclides for the time period after AD 1885, using multiproxy analyses (lithology, mineralogy, and geochemistry) of proximal glaciomarine sediments from the Oga F…

  • Double Corrals - New Sites of the Bronze Age in the North-West Crimea and Their Study by Geophysical, Geochemical and Microbiological Methods

T N Smekalova, Fedor Lisetskii et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2021

In the course of systematic exploration in 2007-2020, using natural-scientific approaches, more than 50 new settlements of the Bronze Age were discovered and investigated in North-West Crimea, for which borders, layouts were determined, and individual building complexes were identified. This became possible only with the use of an interdisciplinary methodology that combines the analysis of satellite images, magnetic survey and selective excavatio…

  • English «Bobby» Versus Russian Policeman (English Police in the 19th – Early 20th Century Russian Public Opinion)

    Alexander Borisov, Irina Vazhenina•ARTICLE•Sotsiologicheskie issledovaniya•2020

  • Magnetic surveys locate Late Bronze Age corrals

    Open Access•T N Smekalova, Bruce W Bevan et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 6

A new type of livestock enclosure from the Late Bronze Age has been discovered. Stone walls outline a pair of circular or oval areas that may be up to 50 m in diameter. The stone walls are invisible at the surface; they were discovered in north‐western Crimea and only with the aid of remote sensing and geophysical surveys. In the period 2007–2020, over two dozen of these structures were found; none has ever been noted before. The locations of the…

  • Thermophilic microorganisms in arable land around medieval archaeological sites in Northern Caucasus, Russia

    Open Access•E V Chernysheva, Elena Chernysheva et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 13

Thermophilic microorganisms in the soils of medieval cultivated fields located within the Kislovodsk Basin (Northern Caucasus, Russia) were selected as a means for the reconstruction of manuring practices. Thermophilic bacteria are specific groups of microorganisms that develop in manure during the composting process when temperatures reach 60–70°C. The abundance of this type of bacteria in soils depends greatly on the intensity of farming practi…
