The Maternal Psychophysical Knot
The Most Hysterical Psychoanalyst
This paper is an investigation into the prominence of hysteria in Lacan’s work and the enduring significance of the diagnosis for contemporary practice. Beginning with Lacan’s theory of neurosis, the importance of language, and symbolic functions, we will begin to understand why the hysterical symptom is the symptomatic structure par excellence. Lacan lauds hysteria as the neurosis in direct dialogue with a given historical moment, teaching the p…
A child is being aborted
Somato-militancy
Looking at Paul B. Preciado's relationship to psychoanalysis across texts, but especially the recent book Can the Monster Speak?: A Report to an Academy of Psychoanalysts, I seek to disentangle a possible vision for a new psychoanalysis from Preciado's concerns, ambivalence and disgust with the professional field. I call this a somato-militant psychoanalysis that leans on Freud's notion of conversion as the creation of a parasitic traumatic kerne…
The respiratory drive
The central phrase linking the coronavirus pandemic to the Black Lives Matter demonstrations to the climate change crisis is I can't breathe. What, if anything, does psychoanalysis have to say about breathing? Looking at Freud, Ferenczi, Rank, Winnicott, Lacan, and some current philosophical thoughts, the authors consider a neglected respiratory drive and its relationship to the death drive, giving us new insight into this unprecedented moment
The Formative Power of Metony#metoo
What can we learn about #MeToo starting with a formal analysis of its structure? What does the linguistic affirmation of adding one “me” to another “me” ad infinitum create in its powerful drift? This metonymical structure, moving part by part, creates the wildfire spread of the movement, adding to its volatility, including its power against institutional structures that trade more in identity, the stability of an “I,” and the self-preservation o…
The Rape Joke as Ur-Joke
In this paper I argue that the rape joke is the joke par excellence. The ur-joke. Jokes speak the truth like dreams and symptoms and errors. The rape joke does not simply speak a truth—the truth about rape, or rapists—its truth is oddly the truth of joking itself and the tragicomedic vicissitudes of human sexuality. This is one way to understand the importance of Vanessa Place’s work and its ethical stakes
Memento Mori
Despite Testo Junkie’s overt criticisms of psychoanalysis, this essay attempts to read the formal aspect of the work—as a process of mourning, a body-essay, an experimental protocol of intoxication—through the lens of the everyday practice of clinical psychoanalysis. Looking at the way soma erupts in the consulting room, the conundrums of agency and identity, Preciado’s (2013) work on the biopolitics of the psychopharamacopornographic era is show…
Dreaming in Exile or the Exile of Dreams
Critique and Cure
The Ordinary and the Extraordinary Countertransference
This is both a clinical and an epistemological inquiry into the concept of countertransference. A distinction is made between the ordinary countertransference, a transitory disruption residing within the analyst's consciousness, and the extraordinary countertransference, an impasse intolerable to the analyst to such an extent that it remains outside awareness. This distinction, rooted in the history of psychoanalytic thought, is here traced in a …
