  • Communal Trauma, Communal Justice: Discussion of Afarin Kohan and Bettina von Lieres

    Melanie Suchet•ARTICLE•Psychoanalytic Dialogues•2024

In exploring collective trauma, the works of Kohan and von Lieres reveal how political subjectivity emerges through collective activism transforming helplessness, invisibility and despair. Inspired by the two authors, and their deep commitment to political action, I want to find ways to break through the dissociation of those in power. Rather than leaving the responsibility of political citizenship solely in the hands of the marginalized, I explo…

  • Coda: Widening the Scope of Psychoanalysis

    Karen Rosica, Melanie Suchet•ARTICLE•Psychoanalytic Dialogues•2022

We will explore the future mutual benefit between the worlds of psychedelics and psychoanalysis by raising questions and imagining possibilities for both. We propose that psychoanalysis will profit from this unfolding dialog that promises to cross disciplines and expand our limited diagnostic world. We will show how psychedelics can be utilized to enhance the therapeutic alliance, self-regulation, structural dissociation, and trauma exposure. Fin…

  • Face to Face

    Melanie Suchet•ARTICLE•Psychoanalytic Dialogues•2010

In “Face to Face,” I explore my work as a Jewish analyst with a Lebanese woman, Ara, who is strongly identified with the Palestinian cause. As the work unfolded I find myself thrust into a psychic and social space I had not wanted to inhabit, into the Israeli–Palestinian conflict and the turmoil of Jewish identity. Ara and I were in the midst of ghosts of historical traumas, intersecting and interweaving history and identity between us. It was he…

  • The 21st Century Body: Introduction

    Melanie Suchet•ARTICLE•Studies in Gender and Sexuality•2009•References: 2

Introducing the topic of body modification, I examine how the body, as cultural symbol of the 21st century, has become the site for exploring subjectivity and creating identity. I ground the 3 articles and 2 discussions that follow in terms of the issues that have revolved around this new, exciting, yet quite challenging subject. Feminists debate whether body modification is a reclaiming of the body or another form of victimization and internaliz…

  • Unraveling Whiteness

    Melanie Suchet•ARTICLE•Psychoanalytic Dialogues•2007

In unraveling whiteness I attempt to make visible that which remains hidden and unnamed. I deconstruct whiteness from historical, political, and psychoanalytic perspectives. I explore the psychic mechanisms used to maintain socially constructed racial identities and the processes that assist one in shifting toward an antiracist position. Much gratitude to the many people who have helped me emotionally and theoretically. Special thanks to my writi…

  • Whose Mind Is It Anyway

Melanie Suchet•ARTICLE•Studies in Gender and Sexuality•2004

This article explores the interesting, yet underinvestigated, phenomenon of unconscious communication. Newer psychoanalytic theories, which have expanded on the centrality of the analyst's subjectivity as well as the patient's experience of that subjectivity, have opened up the analytic space to explore the complexity of transference–countertransference dynamics. Detailed clinical process material is provided to determine if a coconstructed uncon…

Hillsdale, NJ: Analytic Press, 2000. xvii & 173 pp. $39.95. This review, written by two relational analysts closely involved in the theoretical and institutional developments formed around the work of Stephen Mitchell, is, perhaps inevitably, an occasion both for memorial and…

  • Employed mothers: Interrole conflict, spouse support and marital functioning

    Open Access•Melanie Suchet, Julian Barling•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•1986•Cited by: 16•References: 7

Increased participation by mothers in the labour force may exert a negative effect on working mothers themselves (e.g. interrole conflict) and influence the marital relationship negatively. Recent research suggests that not all individuals experiencing psychological distress suffer psychological strain (e.g. marital discord). Rather, variables such as social support moderate negative effects of psychological stressors. To test this, sixty‐four em…
