Unsent Letter to a Father
Community psychoanalysis and the generative landscape of our times
In this paper five members of the “Community Psychoanalytic Track and Consortium” (CPT&C) in San Francisco, California, each holding different positionalities and functioning in different roles, come together in dialog with the shared aim to bring themselves and their readers inside the CPT&C. This writing project recapitulates principles of the CPT&C's vision itself: to form polyvocal groups with the shared task of supporting each other in our v…
(Re)finding Feminism Beyond the Binary
Invoking the spirit of Muriel Dimen’s early queering of psychoanalytic writing, the author sandwiches – between echoes of Dimen’s 1991 paper on deconstructing (gender) difference and Judith Butler’s (contemporaneous) 1990 gender-deconstructing masterpiece “Gender Trouble” – a recent, excerpted dialogue among five female-born queers who serrendipitously helped each other flesh out how their 20th century woman-centered feminist values (still!) crit…
A Letter to Kathleen Del Mar Miller
In a direct letter to the author Kathleen Miller (this issue), I take up her radical invitation to “call and respond, or call and call, respond and respond” to her rich, poetic writing in hopes of further “queering” her ideas that emerged from clinical work with her genderqueer patient, K (this issue). Such authentic exchange at the margins has the potential to “queer,” as verb: to keep critically unsettling conventional psychoanalytic thinking, …
The Bad Enough Mother
This is a [de]-composed conversation between the author and a few feminist writers about how a mother’s resistance to interpellating gender is an echoed call to resistance against society’s interpellation of mother. Alongside the words of a few selected 20th- and 21st-century writers, as well as a brief personal and a clinical vignette, the author illustrates ways in which the bad enough mother survives the relentless scrutiny of society—starting…
From the talking cure to a disease of silence
This article presents an in-depth study of one institute's efforts to recover from effects of ethical violations by two senior members. Qualitative data analysis from voluntary member interviews details the damage that spread throughout the institute, demonstrating that a violation of one is a violation of many. Members at all levels reported feeling disturbed in ways that affected their emotional equilibrium, their thinking processes, and their …
Lesbian Desire in the Age of Aids
In the age of AIDS, lesbians' sexualities were strangely protected from the epidemic spread of the HIV virus, even while many lesbians' social and political lives were deeply impacted by its catastrophic effects on the gay community. The “so close but yet so far” phenomenon defining lesbian experience during the AIDS crisis evoked mixed and complicated emotions unique to that sector of the gay community. This article highlights the manifold emoti…
Stuck in the ’80s
The case of a 38-year-old lesbian patient in psychotherapy is presented and discussed. Issues include feelings of disconnection and stagnation in both patient and therapist, and masculine and feminine (butch and femme) gender expression in lesbians
