  • Solidarity Should Not Be Contingent

    Open Access•Susan Orr•ARTICLE•PS Political Science & Politics•2019

A striking implication of these estimates is that 94 percent of the net employment growth in the U.S. economy from 2005 to 2015 appears to have occurred in alternative work arrangements

  • What’s a Political Theorist to Do

Open Access•Susan Orr, James Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•THEORIA An International Journal…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 18

John Rawls famously distinguishes between ideal and nonideal theory, according priority to the former. He depicts his own efforts to articulate the conception of justice as fairness as an instance of ideal theory. Subsequent political theorists have taken Rawls’s distinction as a template for how we should understand the tasks of political theory. Yet they also have struggled to clarify the underlying distinction with notable lack of success. We …

  • Cooperative Democracy and Political-Economic Development

    Susan Orr, James D Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•The Good Society•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Worker Cooperatives have emerged as integral to political-economic development proposals in various jurisdictions across the U.S. in recent years. We connect these proposals to extant empirical research on the effect of participation in the workplace on conventional civic and political participation. And we suggest how commonalities in the work of Amartya Sen and Elinor Ostrom afford theoretical resources for designing and assessing such policy i…

  • Labor Unions and the Mobilization of Latino Voters

    Open Access•Peter L Francia, Susan Orr•ARTICLE•Political Research Quarterly•2014•Cited by: 13•References: 46

Despite large population gains, political observers commonly refer to Latinos as a “sleeping giant” because of low voter turnout. Conversely, steady declines in union membership have led some to label organized labor a “dinosaur.” Several unions have made special outreach efforts to Latinos to rebuild their ranks and improve Latino political participation. Incorporating insights from the Civic Voluntarism Model, we find union affiliation increase…

  • Hit by a perfect storm? Art & Design in the National Student Survey

Mantz Yorke, Susan Orr et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2014•References: 7

There has long been the suspicion amongst staff in Art & Design that the ratings given to their subject disciplines in the UK's National Student Survey are adversely affected by a combination of circumstances – a ‘perfect storm’. The ‘perfect storm’ proposition is tested by comparing ratings for Art & Design with those for a selection of other subjects chosen because they share some features that might lead to lower ratings on the survey. Data fr…

  • The Civic Institute Relocated

    Susan Orr•ARTICLE•The Good Society•2013

“What we are against: The weakening and downright disappearance of the public spirit, understood not simply as a commitment to the common good and public service, but as a commitment to help create a better world.”—STATEMENT FROM THE FRAMERS ... OF THE INSTITUTE OF CIVIC STUDIES I left the Summer Institute of Civic Studies in the summer of 2011 still unsure about what I thought of the central puzzle, what makes a “good citizen.” I had enjoyed two…

  • Making judgements about students making work

    Open Access•Susan Orr, Sue Bloxham•ARTICLE•Arts and Humanities in Higher…•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This research study explores the assessment practices in two higher education art and design departments. The key aim of this research was to explore art and design studio assessment practices as lived and experienced by art and design lecturers. This work draws on two bodies of pre-existing research. Firstly this study adopted methodological approaches that have been employed to good effect to explore assessment in text based subjects (think alo…

  • Mark my words

Sue Bloxham, Peter Boyd et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2011•Cited by: 6•References: 32

This article seeks to illuminate the gap between UK policy and practice in relation to the use of criteria for allocating grades. It critiques criterion-referenced grading from three perspectives. Twelve lecturers from two universities were asked to ‘think aloud’ as they graded two written assignments. The study found that assessors made holistic rather than analytical judgements. A high proportion of the tutors did not make use of written criter…

  • Collaborating or fighting for the marks? Students’ experiences of group work assessment in the creative arts

    Susan Orr•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2010

The study explores students’ and lecturers’ experiences of group work assessment in a performing arts department that includes undergraduate studies in theatre, dance and film. Working from the perspective that assessment is a socially situated practice informed by, and mediated through, the socio‐political context within which it occurs, this research takes the form of an inquiry that employs qualitative approaches to data collection using inter…

  • Assessment moderation

    Susan Orr•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2007

In this paper the author considers the positivist approaches in mainstream higher education assessment research. She contrasts this to emerging poststructuralist perspectives and goes on to report on a study into the assessment moderation practices in a higher education art department. In this research she explores the ways in which art and design lecturers talk about students’ grades in moderation meetings and reports on the different ways that …
