  • Playing by white rules of racial equality

Open Access•Gavin Ward, Joanne Hill et al.•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 18

Inequalities related to racial identity are consistently reported across social institutions, not least education, and sport. These inequalities consistently challenge ‘post-race’ narratives that rationalise racism down to individual prejudices and poor decision-making. This paper presents part of the findings from a wider a twelve-month research project commissioned by British University and Colleges Sport (BUCS) to explore race equality. This w…

  • Negotiating whiteness through brownness

Gavin Ward, Ronnie Richards et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 30

This paper aims to explore the potential of using dialogue between intersectional and pragmatist theorising of transactional social relations. By considering tensions within intersectional research, a position is developed which utilises a mutual constitution approach to intersectional theory and the dynamic, ongoing, complex social relations captured in pragmatist theorising. It is argued that from this position race and ethnicity become actions…

  • Lived experiences of undergraduate physical education students studying gymnastics and dance education

    Gavin Ward, David S Scott•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 15

The focus of this study was to understand undergraduate students’ experiences of gymnastics and dance education within the scrutiny of modular learning in Higher Education. A phenomenological position was adopted in order to understand the wholeness of students’ experiences whereby identities are constituted through their lived lives. This allowed us to understand the students’ identities as relational to the learning and assessment context and t…

  • Negotiating the Daily Mile Challenge; looking-like a walking break from the classroom

    Gavin Ward, David S Scott•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2019•References: 6

The purpose of this study was to privilege the views of both pupils and staff in one school’s adoption of the Daily Mile Challenge (DMC). Listening seriously to the views of pupils, who are often the unheard subjects in whole school exercise interventions, the aim was to understand the meanings derived from the requirement to practice the DMC. Data are drawn from non-participant observations, 4 individual teacher interviews and 4 pupil focus grou…

  • Primary Physical Education

    Open Access•Gavin Ward, Gerald Griggs•ARTICLE•European Physical Education Review•2017•Cited by: 7•References: 10

Physical Education is widespread across the world, yet despite its cultural variation it remains remarkably similar. The ability of the subject to replicate its practices makes it a potential site for exploration from a memetic perspective. The purpose of this paper is to examine documentary evidence such as research papers, policy documents and inspection reports, and offer for consideration potential memes that are at work within the memeplex o…

  • Knowing in primary physical education in the UK

    Open Access•Gavin Ward, Mikael Quennerstedt•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 12

This paper aims to understand how pupils and teachers actions-in-context constitute being-a-pupil and being-a-teacher within a primary school physical education (PE) movement culture. Dewey and Bentley's theory of transaction, which views organism-in-environment-as-a-whole, enables the researcher to explore how actions-in-ongoing activities constitute and negotiate PE movement culture. Video footage from seven primary school PE lessons from a sch…

  • The London 2012 Legacy for Primary Physical Education

    Open Access•Gerald Griggs, Gavin Ward•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2013•References: 26

Legacy rhetoric claiming to inspire a generation of young people has pervaded the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics from the initial bidding processes, through to post events discourses. On the eve of the closing ceremony David Cameron, published a statement on the Number 10 webpage stating a desire to put competitive sport at the heart of a new curriculum for primary Physical Education. This intention will impact upon a congested policy space…

  • Learning movement culture

    Gavin Ward•ARTICLE•Sport Education and Society•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 11

This article examines Movement Culture as an approach to support teachers in exploring the integration of Sport as a medium for learning within Physical Education. By avoiding the need to draw clearly defined lines between Physical Education and Sport, Movement Culture embraces both. It acknowledges the need for subject matter in Physical Education to reflect societal shifts towards greater individualisation and means of seeking self-realisation,…

  • Dogmatism and Externality in Locus of Control As Related to Counselor Trainee Skill In Facilitative Responding

    Open Access•Alfred F Carlozzi, N Jo Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•Counselor Education and Supervision•1982•Cited by: 4•References: 26

It was hypothesized in this study that dogmatism and externality in locus of control are inversely related to skill in facilitative responding when the effects of specific counselor training program, number of graduate hours in counseling, age, sex, race, and religious affiliation are controlled. The participants were 215 master's degree candidates majoring in guidance and counseling at three southwestern universities. Dogmatism and externality w…

  • The Prediction of Performance of Olympic Athletes in Discus, Hammer, Javelin, and Shotput From Measures of Personality Characteristics

Open Access•G Robert Ward, Gavin Ward et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1979

For each of four subsamples of Olympic-quality athletes—14 Discus, 8 Hammer, 11 Javelin, and 12 Shotput specialists—measures of 19 personality constructs yielded only two statistically significant validity coefficients (out of 76 possible significant indices) in the prediction of average length of throw. The conclusion was reached that the self-report personality measures employed afford little promise as predictors of success in the four Olympic…

  • The Validity of a Composite of Nineteen Personality Variables in Differentiating Between American World Class Olympic Contenders and Undergraduate Education Majors

    Open Access•Michael M Omizo, James R Morrow et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1979

The differential validity of 19 personality variables was examined in a comparison of the affective characteristics of a sample of American World Class Olympic contenders (N = 48) with those of a group of undergraduate education majors (N = 63). A two-group discriminant analysis yielded a canonical correlation of .58 (p

This study examined the predictive validity of the 18 scales of the California Psychological Inventory (CPI) and of two scales of the Opinion Scale relative to success criteria in graduate school as measured by grades in individual courses, performance on the Master's Comprehensive Examinations (MCE), and graduate grade-point average (GGPA). Subjects were 107 graduate students in a master's degree program in Counselor Education. Scores on CPI sca…

This study evaluated the use of Interpersonal Process Recall (IPR) with videotape (as opposed to more traditional methods) in improving the effectiveness of practicum students. The practicum students were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups: (a) a video-IPR, (b) an audio-IPR, and (c) supervision using an audiotape of a regular counseling session. Three judges were asked to rate videotapes of 54 practicum students conducting their f…
