  • A neurocognitive account of attentional control theory: How does trait anxiety affect the brain’s attentional networks

    Open Access•Michael W Eysenck, Jason S Moser et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition & Emotion•2023

Attentional control theory (ACT) was proposed to account for trait anxiety's effects on cognitive performance. According to ACT, impaired processing efficiency in high anxiety is mediated through inefficient executive processes that are needed for effective attentional control. Here we review the central assumptions and predictions of ACT within the context of more recent empirical evidence from neuroimaging studies. We then attempt to provide an…

  • Parsing neurobiological heterogeneity of the clinical high-risk state for psychosis: A pseudo-continuous arterial spin labelling study

Open Access•Dominic Oliver, Cathy Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

On this evidence, APS and BLIPS are unlikely to be neurobiologically distinct. Due to this and the weak-to-moderate evidence for the null hypothesis, future research should investigate larger samples of APS and BLIPS through collaboration across large-scale international consortia

  • Basic Self-Disturbances Related to Reduced Anterior Cingulate Volume in Subjects at Ultra-High Risk for Psychosis

Open Access•Ilaria Bonoldi, Paul Allen et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2019

Introduction: Alterations of the "pre-reflective" sense of first-person perspective (e.g., of the "basic self") are characteristic features of schizophrenic spectrum disorders and are significantly present in the prodromal phase of psychosis and in subjects at ultra-high risk for psychosis (UHR). Studies in healthy controls suggest that neurobiological substrate of the basic self involves cortical midline structures, such as the anterior and post…

  • Identifying Individuals at High Risk of Psychosis: Predictive Utility of Support Vector Machine using Structural and Functional MRI Data

Open Access•Isabel Valli, Andre F Marquand et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2016

The identification of individuals at high risk of developing psychosis is entirely based on clinical assessment, associated with limited predictive potential. There is, therefore, increasing interest in the development of biological markers that could be used in clinical practice for this purpose. We studied 25 individuals with an at-risk mental state for psychosis and 25 healthy controls using structural MRI, and functional MRI in conjunction wi…

  • Translating Neurocognitive Models of Auditory-Verbal Hallucinations into Therapy: Using Real-time fMRI-Neurofeedback to Treat Voices

Open Access•Thomas Fovet, Natasza Orlov et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2016

Auditory-verbal hallucinations (AVHs) are frequent and disabling symptoms, which can be refractory to conventional psychopharmacological treatment in more than 25% of the cases. Recent advances in brain imaging allow for a better understanding of the neural underpinnings of AVHs. These findings strengthened transdiagnostic neurocognitive models that characterize these frequent and disabling experiences. At the same time, technical improvements in…

  • Using Structural Neuroimaging to Make Quantitative Predictions of Symptom Progression in Individuals at Ultra-High Risk for Psychosis

    Open Access•Stefania Tognin, William Pettersson‐Yeo et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2014

Neuroimaging holds the promise that it may one day aid the clinical assessment of individual psychiatric patients. However, the vast majority of studies published so far have been based on average differences between groups, which do not permit accurate inferences at the level of the individual. We examined the potential of structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data for making accurate quantitative predictions about symptom progression in i…

  • The Cosmos and Theological Reflection: The Priority of Self-Transcendence

    Open Access•Paul Allen•ARTICLE•Théologiques•2002

In this article, I argue that the primary significance of cosmology for theology is through a notion of self-transcendence. It is an inherently theological notion arising within cosmology. It points to the realm of interiority claimed by contemporary theology. Employing the thought of Ernan McMullin in particular, I claim that self-transcendence emerges within cosmological inquiry when it becomes philosophy, and when extrapolation is involved. A …
