Pragmatic aspects of wh-interrogatives in Marzahn German
On the Absence of Propositional Negation from Hungarian Polar e ‐Interrogatives
It is argued that the ban on propositional “inside” negation in Hungarian polar e ‐interrogatives can be derived as a syntactic intervention effect. An Agree‐based formalization is sketched that crucially relies on a diachronically motivated negative formal feature on the interrogative particle ‐ e . A putative counterexample is taken to be echoic. We indicate a way to capture the echoic licensing of propositional negation within an extended form…
On the Rich Agreement Hypothesis and varieties of embedded V2
This paper addresses the controversy between Koeneman & Zeijlstra (K&Z) (2014) and Heycock & Sundquist (2017) concerning the viability of K&Z’s strong version of the Rich Agreement Hypothesis in the light of apparent counterexamples from the diachrony of Danish. It makes the general point that establishing whether or not cases of putative V-to-I movement in subordinate clauses can be reanalyzed as V-to-C, i.e. as embedded Verb Second (EV2), depen…

On infinitivals hosting logophors: The case of Icelandic
This squib provides counterexamples to the claim that Icelandic reflexive sig cannot be construed logophorically if immediately contained inside an infinitival clause. Consequences for Eric Reuland's views on the division of labor between grammar and pragmatics are discussed
Beyond Expressives: Explorations in Use-Conditional Meaning
Beyond Expressives: Explorations in Use-Conditional Meaning offers empirical and theoretical studies of expressions whose meaning falls outside the standard realm of truth-conditional semantics. Aspects of meaning that are better captured by their use-conditions instead came into the spotlight of formal semantics recently, mainly due to the raised interest in expressions like interjections or swear words. Going beyond such expressives, the contri…
Pragmatic markers in Hungarian: Some introductory remarks
The purpose of these introductory remarks is to complement the following case studies by Ferenc Kiefer on majd 'later (on), sooner or later', Attila Pteri on hadd 'let', and Ildik Vask on persze 'of course'. What we will do is sketch a number of what we consider promising theoretical developments that have a bearing on the issues raised in these studies. In a section addressing issues of form (section 2), we discuss "cartographic" approaches to a…

Interfaces + Recursion = Language?: Chomsky's Minimalism and the View from Syntax-Semantics
The Minimalist Program postulates the equation Interfaces + Recursion = Language - a radical reduction of the language to the core mechanism and the interfaces. With contributions by Noam Chomsky and other experts, this volume evaluates the minimalists' proposal against evidence from syntax and semantics by asking questions like the following: What kind of recursive structures can the core generator form? How can properties of language be reduced…
Germanic V-in-C: Some Riddles
1. Introduction Usually, the Germanic languages are classified syntactically as V2-languages (see König and van der Auwera 1994). This is clearly due to the fact that they coincide wrt predominance of V-in-C clauses in root positions. Given this V-in-C/root correlation, it is highly plausible that a proper linguistic account of the exact distribution of Germanic V-in-C should at some level of analysis make appeal to the one characteristic propert…
Intonational phrasing, discontinuity, and the scope of negation
And nothing is, but what is not(Macbeth I.iii.142)Abstract. We discuss several cases of English and German negative quantifiers taking extended scope. We argue that these scope extensions are sensitive to linear and prosodic continuity, a fact that we capture in terms of a Condition on Extended Scope Taking (CEST). We provide two formalizations of CEST, one couched in minimalist terms and another within the framework of Combinatory Categorial Gra…
On object-shift in Icelandic and partial iconicity
On the force of V2 declaratives
This paper discusses a variant of German V2 declaratives sharing properties with both subordinate relative clauses and main clauses. I argue that modal subordination failure helps decide between two rivaling accounts for this construction. Thus, a hypotactic analysis involving syntactic variable sharing must be preferred over parataxis plus anaphora resolution. The scopal behavior of the construction will be derived from its 'proto-assertional fo…
