Perturbative causality
This paper examines the development of causal perturbation theory, a reformulation of perturbative quantum theory (QFT) starting from a causality condition rather than a time-evolution equation. We situate this program alongside other causality-based reformulations of relativistic quantum theory which flourished in the post-war period, contrasting it in particular with axiomatic QFT. Whereas the axiomatic QFT tradition tried to move beyond the pe…
Nothing comes from nothing but the rho meson
Taking approximations seriously
The birth of quantum mechanics from the spirit of radiation theory
John Wheeler’s Desert Island
On the history of the quantum. Introduction to the HQ4 special issue
The state is not abolished, it withers away
Translation as heuristics
The Literature Review as Imagined Past
This essay argues that the most fruitful place for historians of science to look for and investigate science’s imagined pasts is in the literature reviews and bibliographies of scientific papers
From dressed electrons to quasiparticles
QED and the man who didn׳t make it
The Reinvention of General Relativity
The history of the theory of general relativity presents unique features. After its discovery, the theory was immediately confirmed and rapidly changed established notions of space and time. The further implications of general relativity, however, remained largely unexplored until the mid 1950s, when it came into focus as a physical theory and gradually returned to the mainstream of physics. This essay presents a historiographical framework for a…
