The role of rural health entrepreneurship in community resilience
Healthcare providers have been encouraged to become entrepreneurs to fill a widening service gap in depleted rural areas. This paper explores how these entrepreneurs add value, finding a complex multidimensional process of value creation in rural healthcare. Taking a grounded approach, 40 health entrepreneurs were interviewed across the health settings of four European countries characterised by ‘mixed’ public–private healthcare. Through an insti…
Conjectures and Disconfirmations
One model in particular, the Standard Model Higgs, is taken to have been confirmed by the Higgs boson discovery at the LHC, even though many models are compatible with the data. Some models even provided riskier predictions and should perhaps be regarded as having been even more strongly confirmed. This paper sketches an argument demonstrating this by comparing the confirmation of the Standard Model Higgs with that of the Higgs in minimal supersy…
Introduction
Bottoms up
Experiments in particle physics have hitherto failed to produce any significant evidence for the many explicit models of physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) that had been proposed over the past decades. As a result, physicists have increasingly turned to model-independent strategies as tools in searching for a wide range of possible BSM effects. In this paper, we describe the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SM-EFT) and analyse it in th…
From a boson to the standard model Higgs
Serial Killers and the Media
This book examines the media and cultural responses to the awful crimes of Brady and Hindley, whose murders provided a template for future media reporting on serial killers. It explores a wide variety of topics relating to the Moors Murders case including: the historical and geographical context of the murders, the reporting of the case and the unique features which have become standard for other murder cases e.g. nicknames for the serial killers…
Reimagining Undergraduate Health and Social Care Education
NHS England’s Five Year Forward View outlines new care models and the need for a workforce that has the skills, values, and competencies to deliver this vision. This is a position paper detailing the context, method, and intentions of a Health Education England funded project led by Manchester Metropolitan University in the North West of England, which the authors see as making a key contribution to addressing issues of illness, crisis, and loss …
On structural accounts of model-explanations
Drowning in here in his bloody sea’
Policing is widely recognised as one of the most stressful occupations. Numerous studies have explored the ways in which stress impacts on the personal and professional lives of officers. Using this literature as context, the article explores the way in which representations of policing in film and TV have changed to reflect this issue, to the point where the predominant mode of representation is the dysfunctional officer broken by the job. Using…
