  • Ecstatic queer nature: Flowers, seeds and everyday joys in paintings by Jonathan Lyndon Chase

    Open Access•David Deutsch•ARTICLE•Queer Studies in Media & Popular…•2021

This article demonstrates how Jonathan Lyndon Chase utilizes a range of abstract images of flowers, seeds and even a cowboy aesthetic to reimagine the relationship between nature and queer men of colour in the contemporary United States. Chase uses flowers and seeds as multifaceted symbols, carefully shaped, to evoke the fragile and yet revitalizing joys of a messy human growth. These allusions to growth, plant and human, offer a specific challen…

  • The logic of experimental tests, particularly of Everettian quantum theory

    Open Access•David Deutsch•ARTICLE•Studies in History and Philosophy…•2016

Claims that the standard procedure for testing scientific theories is inapplicable to Everettian quantum theory, and hence that the theory is untestable, are due to misconceptions about probability and about the logic of experimental testing. Refuting those claims by correcting those misconceptions leads to an improved theory of scientific methodology (based on Popper׳s) and testing, which allows various simplifications, notably the elimination o…

  • Immer mit Liebe: Empathic violence in Nazi euthanasia

    David Deutsch•ARTICLE•Holocaust Studies•2016•References: 2

Empathy is commonly linked to positive emotions, toward the ‘Other;’ it is a form of inner observation, wherein the observer takes a leap into another person’s feelings, understandings, fears and wishes. However, there is little research that has explored the violent possibilities that an empathic discourse can hold, prompt and generate. Typically, academic analysis accepted the warm and comfortable image the linguistic sphere of empathy creates.…

  • The politics of intimacy: Nazi and Hutu propaganda as case studies

David Deutsch, Niza Yanay•ARTICLE•Journal of Genocide Research•2016•Cited by: 1

This study examines the particular (but not exclusive) relationship between violent intimacy and Nazi and Hutu genocidal propaganda in relation to national desires. It focuses on the fears of the ‘double’ (the close stranger) as projected in language in order to point to the ‘anxiety of intimacy’ as a dangerous social space that under specific historical and political conditions can turn into genocide. As paradoxical as it may seem, intimacy is n…

  • Art and Imperfection: Zola's L'Œuvre

    David Deutsch•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of French…•2015

Critics have long highlighted the impossible ambitions of Zola's search for realism in art. This article argues that in L'Œuvre, Zola acknowledges the inevitable failures of large-scale artworks to depict broad subjects accurately. Yet, he counterbalances these aesthetic flaws by stressing the ability of small-scale works or sections of larger works to offer accurate depictions of slices of life or of the human body. Zola, in effect, emphasizes t…

  • Quantum theory of probability and decisions

    Open Access•David Deutsch•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Royal Society…•1999

The probabilistic predictions of quantum theory are conventionally obtained from a special probabilistic axiom. But that is unnecessary because all the practical consequences of such predictions follow from the remaining non–probabilistic axioms of quantum theory, together with the non–probabilistic part of classical decision theory.
