Vulnerability to climate change and the desire for mitigation
Black engineering students’ motivation for PhD attainment: Passion plus purpose
Purpose Much of the extant research, practice and policy in engineering education has focused on the limited persistence, waning interest and lack of preparation among Black students to continue beyond the post-secondary engineering pipeline. However, this research suggests that many Black PhD students persist and succeed in engineering, fueled by various motivational strengths. To better understand the motivations of Black students in engineerin…
Climate change perception, observation and policy support in rural Nevada: A comparative analysis of Native Americans, non-native ranchers and farmers and mainstream America
As climate change research burgeons at a remarkable pace, it is intersecting with research regarding indigenous and rural people in fascinating ways. Yet, there remains a significant gap in integrated quantitative and qualitative methods for studying rural climate change perception and policy support, especially with regard to Native Americans. The objectives of this paper are to utilize our multi-method approach of integrating surveys, interview…
Las Vegas: The Perils of Deception-Fueled Growth
There are two types of deception – the deception of others and self-deception. Las Vegas thrives on both. Many would be aware of the importance of the first type of deception for the health of the Las Vegas economy, as they would for Macau, Monte Carlo, etc. Without the symbol of wealth to achieve elite global tourism status, and the ‘moth to the flame’ illusion of the likelihood of visitors to get ‘lucky’ and win great wealth, there would be no …
Measuring inequality with interval data
Geographic factors complicating hazard responses on small islands
Small islands, such as those found in the Pacific, experience the impacts of their relatively unique geographic profiles in relation to hazards and vulnerability in at least four ways: 1) perception and communication; 2) impact; 3) technology; and 4) socio-environmental justice. Analysis in these four areas highlights distinct ways in which hazards and vulnerability should be conceptualized in the under-researched small islands of the world. Less…
Does residential location matter to the employment of Tanf recipients? Evidence from a dynamic discrete choice model with unobserved effects
The place of rural, remote and least-wealthy small islands in international water development: The nexus of geography-technology sustainability in Chuuk State, Federated States of Micronesia
Many least-wealthy, rural, remote and resource-poor small island communities are unlikely to benefit from high-profile global water improvement initiatives. Their small landmasses, geologic composition, geography, social and technological isolation, colonial history, and weak educational and financial resources constitute significant barriers to improving access to safe drinking water. This paper discusses the relatively unique position of such i…
Education for all in South Africa: Developing a national system for quality assurance
The search for quality education is a world-wide phenomenon but it is particularly important in the developing world, where education is widely viewed as a key to individual and collective success. Traditionally, school performance has been measured by various test scores and South Africa's longstanding obsession with matriculation exam results exemplifies this focus. However, as policy makers in South Africa have been discovering since the trans…
Inequality Orderings, Normalized Stochastic Dominance, and Statistical Inference
This article derives large-sample properties and provides asymptotically distribution-free statistical inference procedures for an alternative approach to inequality orderings—normalized stochastic dominance (NSD). NSD is a straightforward extension of standard dominance techniques. As such, it can be generalized to higher orders of dominance, thereby providing a more powerful technique for ranking distributions. We illustrate the NSD method by a…

International Comparisons of Income Inequality: Tests for Lorenz Dominance Across Nine Countries
This paper examines income inequality across nine countries using the Luxembourg Income Study data set. New statistical tests and comparability of data provide an exceptionally clear picture of relative income inequality. Only 4 comparisons out of a possible 108 cannot be ranked. In most cases, differences in the definition of the recipient unit make little difference in the rankings. Irrespective of recipient units, Sweden, Norway, and Germany c…
