Open Access•Juyoung Song, Deborah Howard et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2022

In this study, two teachers of multilingual learners in the U.S. report case stories about how they implemented translanguaging approaches in support of their students’ social emotional learning. Translanguaging refers to bilinguals’ meaning-making process using their multilingual resources. • Engineering the Eternal City

    Open Access•Deborah Howard•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2020

In the account of his visit to the Holy City published in 1581, English priest Gregory Martin wrote eloquently of the plight of beggars and vagrants in the streets of Rome: ‘Dayes and nights they wander up and down needy and harbourlesse, shewing their diseases, calling upon their Creator for helpe.’ The book reviewed here provides a much-needed corrective to the rhetoric of urban ‘improvement’ that characterises many histories of early modern Ro…

  • The Sacred Home in Renaissance Italy

Abigail Brundin, Deborah Howard et al.•BOOK•Sacred Home in Renaissance Italy•2018

The Sacred Home in Renaissance Italy explores private devotional life in the Italian Renaissance home between 1400 and 1600, and suggests that piety was not confined to the Church and the convent but infused daily life within the household. Books, buildings, objects, spaces, images, and archival sources help to cast light on the practice of religion in the home. Acts of devotion, from routine prayers to extraordinary religious experiences such as…

  • The Status of the Oriental Traveller in Renaissance Venice

    Open Access•Deborah Howard•CHAPTER•Re-Orienting the Renaissance•2005

Travel lore in its widest sense was an integral part of Venetian culture. Over the centuries, merchant handbooks, ambassadors’ reports and pilgrim chronicles had recorded journeys made in the interests of trade, diplomacy and Christian devotion. Within Venice this body of knowledge circulated freely, orally and in manuscript form, but during the sixteenth century its dissemination was to be transformed by ambitious printing initiatives. A new gen…

  • Venice as a Dolphin

    Deborah Howard•ARTICLE•Artibus et Historiae•1997•Cited by: 8•References: 1

The publication of Jacopo de'Barbari's celebrated bird's eye map of Venice, issued in 1500, was sponsored by the German merchant Anton Kolb (felicitously named in the context of this memorial volume). The first part of the article suggests that, given the skills in map-making and perspective available to Barbari, the major distortions in the left-hand side of the map are unlikely to have been accidental, but instead were deliberately contrived to…
