Aboriginal Children in Aboriginal Care: Transforming the Landscape of Child Protection in Australia
Aboriginal communities in Australia have long advocated for self-determination in child protection. This includes appeals for greater structural authority in systems of care and protection, with Aboriginal children in the care of Aboriginal agencies. Advocacy from agencies, including the Victorian Aboriginal Child and Community Agency (VACCA), has resulted in legislative and funding reforms in Victoria that place Victorian Aboriginal community-co…
Forum Introduction
Digital humanities (DH) projects in Asian studies have received scant attention. Yet they raise important questions about who DH projects represent and how they represent them, how the field recognizes labor, the role of digital data in Asian humanities, and the boundaries and affordances of "Asia" as a category of analysis. This essay introduces the forum contributions and articulates the critical frameworks and essential questions for analyzing…
Pandemics, politics and principles: Business and human rights in Southeast Asia in a time of crisis
Business activity has been a key driver of economic dynamism in Southeast Asia and one of the main reasons for the region's growing prosperity in recent decades. It has led to increases in investment and consumption, boosted exports and, in so doing, promoted economic growth. This has in turn created jobs, improved incomes, increased governments' ability to provide social welfare, and lifted millions out of poverty
Looking for Empires: Japanese Colonialism and the Comparative Gaze

Olympic Recoveries
In March 2020, Prime Minister Abe Shinzō, the Tokyo Olympic Organising Committee, and the International Olympic Committee postponed the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for one year. The delay is the most prominent consequence of the COVID-19 crisis in Japan thus far. But the "Corona Calamity" (korona ka) is bigger than the Olympics. The totality of the disaster is impossible to capture. The very thing that makes it a calamity are the myriad rhythms of crisis…

The Affect of Difference: Representations of Race in East Asian Empire
The Affect of Difference is a collection of essays offering a new perspective on the history of race and racial ideologies in modern East Asia. Contributors approach this subject through the exploration of everyday culture from a range of academic disciplines, each working to show how race was made visible and present as a potential means of identification. By analyzing artifacts from diverse media including travelogues, records of speech, photog…
Placing Empire: Travel and the Social Imagination in Imperial Japan
Placing Empire examines the spatial politics of Japanese imperialism through a study of Japanese travel and tourism to Korea, Manchuria, and Taiwan between the late nineteenth century and the early 1950s. In a departure from standard histories of Japan, this book shows how debates over the place of colonized lands reshaped the social and spatial imaginary of the modern Japanese nation. In turn, this sociospatial imaginary affected the ways in whi…

Asymmetrical Integration: Lessons from a Railway Empire
This article reexamines railway imperialism in Manchuria from the perspective of global network building. Through a case study of the Japanese-owned South Manchuria Railway Company (SMR), I trace how one railway empire used through traffic agreements to integrate Northeast Asian railways into a global network while at the same time installing itself as the necessary intermediary between European and Asian overland traffic. I argue that the SMR's …
Imperial Mobility
Histories of modern mobility often assume that modern forms of movement arrived in East Asia as part of a universal process of historical development. This article shows that the valorization of modern mobility in East Asia emerged out of the specific context of Euro-American imperial encroachment and Japanese imperial expansion. Through an examination of the tropes of opening and connecting, the article argues that the mobility of the modern can…
