Arachne, self-care and ‘power-nets’ on women’s self-development programmes
Our article employs a feminist perspective to interpret ethnographic data on soft skills programmes (SSPs) for female staff in Higher Education (HE). We use the story of Arachne as a metaphor for how, under neoliberalism, women are instructed to create local ‘nets of power,’ only to find themselves tangled in a web of conflicting expectations. Our method was informed by Institutional Ethnography (IE). Data incorporated autoethnography, participan…

“Mirror, mirror…." A preliminary investigation of skin tone dissatisfaction and its impact among British adults
This study examined skin tone dissatisfaction, measured using a skin tone chart, among a multiethnic sample of British adults. A total of 648 British White individuals, 292 British South Asians, and 260 British African Caribbean participants completed a visual task in which they were asked to indicate their actual and ideal skin tones. They also completed measures of body appreciation, self-esteem, and ethnic identity attachment. Results showed t…

Integrating environmental consequences and impact assessment into design processes and corporate strategy
As we enter the 21st century, it is clear that products and processes must be designed to contribute to sustainable development. This paper shows that there are forces that make integration of environmental consequences in design processes a profitable part of corporate strategy. Businesses should be considering impacts not only because it is best for our world, but also because there is increasing evidence that it may be the most profitable appr…
Modern human, early modern human and Neanderthal limb proportions
The limb proportions of 686 subjects (461 men and 225 women) from five ethnic groups (White, Inuit, Gurkha, Bantu, San) have been compared. Stature, limb and skeletal measurements were taken directly from the subjects by one observer. The brachial and crural indices of the Whites were markedly smaller (lower) than those of the other populations. The crural indices of the Inuit were similar to those of the two African populations, but this may be …
The prediction of physique from the skeleton
This paper attempts to define the relation between (1) human skeletal measurements and (2) height, weight and physique indices. Admitted to the study were 686 men and women from five ethnic groups (White, Inuit, Gurkha, Bantu and San). In addition to height and weight, subjects had defined cranial and postcranial measurements taken using methods derived from clinical examination techniques. Measurements were checked for reliability. Skinfold call…

The dental arcade and human morphology
Cranio-dental fossils are relatively common in the fossil record and this paper considers the question of whether the dental arcade can act as a predictor of hominid morphology. A method of measuring the catenary number of an arcade is also described and defined. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
An interpretation of the Boxgrove tibia
A discriminant analysis and regression formulae, derived from a modern British population, have been applied to the estimated length and midshaft width of the Boxgrove tibia. The gender was probably, but not certainly, male. The height was probably slightly taller than the average for a modern British male population. The confidence intervals around estimates of the weight, ponderal index, and body mass index are very wide, but the estimates indi…
The body weight of AL 288‐1 (‘Lucy)
A method of estimating the body mass of hominids by use of the skeletal length and physique index is described. The body mass indices (BMI) of female humans and female chimpanzees are known and this permits an estimate of the probable BMI for the female common ancestor and thus for female morphs intermediate between the common ancestor and modern humans. AL288‐1 (‘Lucy’) probably had a BMI of about 22.3 kg m −2 and for a height of 105cm this yiel…
Analyses of measurements taken from adult femurs of a British population
The femur remains an important bone in palaeoanthropology and this paper reports various analyses of measurements taken from long-cassette radiographs of adult femurs of a reference population from the south of England (n=81, males 33, females 48). Discriminant analysis confirmed that the male femur is usually larger than the female femur, and that a femur may be sexed with some confidence. Discriminant scores have been derived to permit estimate…
