  • Managing, Valuing, and Protecting Heritage Resources in the Twenty-First Century: Peatland Archaeology, the Ecosystem Services Framework, and the Kyoto Protocol

Benjamin Gearey, Benjamin R Gearey et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation and Management of…•2014

This paper argues that the development of the Ecosystem Services framework, which has recently emerged as an internationally recognized framework for valuing 'the 'natural capital' of ecosystems, presents a number of opportunities for heritage management and the archaeological record, arguing that the inclusion of archaeological and palaeoenvironmental 'value' within this framework presents an opportunity to incorporate heritage alongside a range…

    Open Access•Benjamin Gearey, Benjamin R Gearey et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2011•References: 11

This paper describes the results of two seasons of excavation and associated palaeoenvironmental analyses of a wetland site on Beccles Marshes, Beccles, Suffolk. The site has been identified as a triple post alignment of oak timbers (0.6–2.0 m long), over 100 m in length, and 3–4 m wide, running north-west to south-east towards the River Waveney. It was constructed in a single phase which has been dated dendrochronologically to 75 BC, although di…

  • From Site to Landscape: Assessing the Value of Geoarchaeological Data in Understanding the Archaeological Record of Domuztepe, Eastern Mediterranean, Turkey

Benjamin Gearey, Benjamin R Gearey et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Archaeology•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 26

This article discusses the potential value of geoarchaeological and paleoenvironmental data for the contextualization of human activity at the site of Domuztepe, southeast Turkey. The data come from cores excavated on a series of transects centered on the höyük and from samples collected for paleoenvironmental assessment and radiocarbon dating. The results indicate that the site is situated on an alluvial plain of some stratigraphic complexity. D…

  • Fluvial sediments, correlations and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction: The development of robust radiocarbon chronologies

  • Quantifying the effects of erosion on the archaeology of intertidal environments: A new approach and its implications for their management

Henry P Chapman, Herrick Chapman et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation and Management of…•2001

While the high archaeological and palaeoecological value of intertidal deposits has become well known, approaches to their management remain extremely restricted. Despite the often high levels of erosion experienced by some sites there has been very little development in methods aimed at understanding or quantifying the threats. This paper presents an approach aimed at monitoring erosion within the Humber estuary, UK, where previous finds includi…
