Educating interior designers: Expanding interior design history through educational narratives
As interior design historian John C. Turpin (2013, 29) identified, over the last century the history of interior design has evolved in close parallel with how history itself is studied and understo
Unveiling layers of interior design in three interwar domestic interior experiments by the avant-garde
Using contemporary theoretical frameworks in interior design, this paper discusses and compares three interior experiments by interwar modernists in the Low Countries, specifically Belgium and the Netherlands, where the relation between the body and space is crucial in different ways. First, the atelier and residence of abstract painter Jozef Peeters in Antwerp reveals a whole personal universe within the existing social housing block. Next, the …
Collective Housing in Belgium and the Netherlands: A Comparative Analysis
Collective housing (CH) is undergoing a revival in Belgium. Since 2009, the Flemish Government Architect and his team have been advocating CH, stressing its importance as a task for architects given the demand for affordable housing and the need to reduce the environmental impact of housing. This support for CH has converged with the work of the non-profit citizen organization Samenhuizen (“Living together”) and the ad hoc initiatives taken by in…
Live Gym Classes At Home: The liberating potential of Lea Daan’s radio gym classes in 1930s Belgian homes
The Covid-19 pandemic has forced people worldwide to stay home for long periods. Dance schools and sports clubs have organized online courses. Homes have thus become a stage for body movements. Although online gym classes seem like a new phenomenon, they had a predecessor in the radio gym classes of the 1930s. Belgian dancer Lea Daan (1906–1995), schooled in modern dance by German choreographer Rudolf von Laban, gave gym classes in Dutch for the …

Socialist Housing in the Eastern Bloc: Lynne Attwood, Gender and Housing in Soviet Russia Kimberly Elman Zarecor, Manufacturing a Socialist Modernity
This essay reviews Gender and Housing in Soviet Russia: Private Life in a Public Sphere (Pittsburgh: 2011) by Lynne Attwood and Manufacturing A Socialist Modernity: Housing in Czechoslovakia, 1945-1960 (Manchester and New York: 2010) by Kimberly Elman Zarecor. The two books contribute to a deep inside analysis of socialist housing. They do this from different perspectives and with different scopes. While Zarecor's study is driven by a fascination…
Uncanny and In-Between: The Garage in Rural and Suburban Belgian Flanders
Starting in the 1950s, postwar Belgian Flanders was a site of emerging and complex relationships among the car, garage, house, street and users. This article explores the shifting meanings of the garage in connection with the concepts of "domestication" and "domesticity." We question how the garage, as a newly configured spatial entity separated from or integrated within the home, is indicative of the gradual domestication of the automobile, and …
Living with High-Rise Modernity: The Modernist Kiel Housing Estate of Renaat Braem, A Catalyst to a Socialist Modern Way of Life
Public housing of the reconstruction period is generally considered a poor imitation of the modernist housing of the interwar period. The pressing housing shortage and the urge for rapid reconstruction initiated the rationalization of the construction process. Still, postwar housing production has often been blamed for having turned into a purely technocratic and pragmatic undertaking and for having lost the leftist ideals in which the modernism …
Shaping Popular Taste: The Belgian Farmers' Association and the Fermette During the 1960s–1970s
After the Second World War the home took on a new relevance as a central concern for governments and citizens alike. In Belgium the need for new housing was met by stimulating private initiative through the Act De Taeye (1948), which provided fiscal incentives for home builders. As a result Belgium, and especially Flanders, has seen an early rise in home ownership, with a concomitant impact of the owners' own preferences on the formal outlook of …
