The integrated food security phase classification system: Seven defining characteristics
The Integrated Phase Classification (IPC) is the global standard for analyzing and classifying food insecurity, including famine. While media attention tends to focus on IPC famine analyses, the IPC conducts most of its analyses in non-famine contexts, providing critical assessments of sub-national food insecurity. These analyses guide considerable humanitarian intervention and investment. We argue that IPC analyses are most valuable and effectiv…
A critical analysis of Athena Swan as a policy‐scoring scheme
Athena Swan was established in 2005 with the goal of advancing the careers of women in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine) subjects in higher education. Since then, it has expanded its remit in various ways and has generated some controversy. This paper explains how Athena Swan operates as a policy‐scoring scheme, requiring universities to submit plans for policy improvement in order to receive a bronze, silver or g…

The QAA 's subject benchmarks and critical pedagogy: The example of ‘gateway to King's’
The UK's Quality Assurance Association for Higher Education (QAA) recommend that all undergraduate courses at UK universities include in their curricula elements of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion; Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Education; and Education for Sustainable Development. This paper examines the detail of the QAA's recommendations and finds that they are significantly influenced by critical pedagogy. While the potential benefits of t…
Gothic Resistances: Flesh, Bones, Ghosts and Time in Vietnamese Postwar Fiction
In contrast to the thousands of critical studies of American writing on the Vietnam War, there has been a relative dearth of English-language appraisals of Vietnamese literature of the American War (as it is known in Vietnam). This disparity in understanding partly informs anthropologist Heonik Kwon’s distinction between “the idiom of ghost” often used in American memories of the war and the widespread public belief in war ghosts in Vietnam, whos…

It is essential to understand the factors that influence…

An Appraisal of the Progress of the Steamship in the Nineteenth Century
One of the Noblest Inventions of the Age’: British Steamboat Numbers, Diffusion, Services and Public Reception, 1812 – c.1823
The operation of the Comet, Britain's first commercial steamboat, on the Clyde in 1812 led to a period of rapid steamboat development. Drawing on little utilised sources, this study examines the impact of the steamboat in its first decade. Diffusion was rapid and relatively nationwide embracing river, coastal and short sea services. The impact in terms of services, mostly passenger orientated (but also including towage), was considerable and cont…
Intersectionality and Multiple Inequalities: Visibility in British Policy on Violence Against Women
Intersectionalities have long been theorised. It is time to move on to empirical testing of intersectionality theory in order to develop it further. The paper analyses visibility of multiple intersecting inequalities in policy on violence against women in Britain. It finds and develops a continuum of inclusion of multiple inequalities to analyse visibility in policy, ranging from the simple naming of inequalities, the intersection of inequalities…
An Appraisal of the Progress of the Steamship in the Nineteenth Century
The invention and subsequent development of the steamship represents a great watershed in maritime transport and humankind’s relationship with the sea. For the first time, vessels were not at the mercy of wind or tide and this, together with the ability to make or leave port at will, permitted scheduled services. These, to a considerable degree, overcame the uncertainties that previously had inevitably accompanied maritime voyages. Over time all …

The Impact of Technological Change: The Early Steamship in Britain
This book presents an in-depth study of the impact of the steamship on Britain during its first forty years, roughly between 1810 and 1850. It relates the early steamship to several industrial themes including diffusion; construction; modernisation; the role of government - particularly the difficult attempt to align laissez-faire politics with the greater need for public safety measures due to technological advance; business and finance; plus pu…

The Steamboat and Popular Tourism
This article discusses the role of the steamboat and popular tourism. The authors argue that the case of the railway in promoting popular recreational traveling, introducing excursions, and encouraging resort development has been overemphasized and in some instances wrongly credited with a pioneering role. The authors maintain that that role was, in fact, played by the steamboat. The article begins with a description of the features and character…

The American Family in Social-Historical Perspective
“Otitis what …….”
Jane enters the classroom amid cries of subversive laughter and cruel comments. She seats herself and proceeds quietly and methodically to do her school work. The other children keep on teasing, pounding at that little girl’s emotions, until she finally sobs and sinks below her desk. She doesn’t hear everything they say - she doesn’t have to - she knows what they are saying and why

Japan's Strategy for Economic Growth: Emulate and Surpass
There are some seductively superficial similarities between British and Japanese economic growth. Both countries were relatively small, heavily populated, off-shore islands with limited indigenous resources which meant they had to trade high added-value manufactured goods to pay for imports of raw materials and foodstuffs. In their time, both dominated the world economy in high technology finished commodities and were the subject ofcuriosity from…

Two-Phase Sampling of Tax Records for Business Surveys
A two-phase design used to sample tax records of businesses to obtain annual estimates of Canadian economic production is described. Classification information obtained from units in the first-phase sample is used during stratification for selection of the second-phase sample. Bernoulli sampling is employed. Given multiple precision constraints, optimal allocation requires solution of a convex programming problem. An approximate method is describ…
