Rather than treating visual sources as mere documentary evidence, this essay emphasizes their active role in constructing truth. Using a 1914 photograph of Los Angeles as a case study, the essay demonstrates how new materialists can critically engage with visual sources in both research and teaching to examine how they shape meaning. It argues that images are uniquely suited to reveal the entanglements between humans and nonhumans while capturing…
Paths to peace? Infrastructures, peace and conflict
This editorial introduces the special issue “Paths to Peace? Infrastructures, Peace and Conflict”, which seeks to bridge transport and mobility history with historical peace and conflict studies – two fields that have largely evolved separately. Drawing on Johan Galtung’s definitions of “peace” and “violence”, the issue shifts beyond a traditional international history and diplomacy focus to explore societal dynamics more broadly, including socia…
Introduction
Do infrastructures possess thing-power? Do they act independently of humans, and how might materiality help us better describe the relationship between humans and infrastructures? This special section explores the promises and limits of new materialism for the history of infrastructure, complicating conventional understandings of the built world. New materialist approaches posit that the material world has intrinsic capacities-forms of agency tha…
Public History
This essay reviews the 2022 American film How to Blow Up a Pipeline , examining its significance for historians of technology. The film highlights do-it-yourself technologies, the experiences of marginalized technology users, and the environmental consequences of infrastructures. Central to the discussion is the film's dystopian portrayal of infrastructure, which drives the characters to take extreme measures, such as the bombing of an oil pipeli…

Excavating Urban Democracy
This essay investigates the changing contours of the public and the private in Los Angeles at the end of the nineteenth century. It argues that the introduction of engineered water supplies from the 1870s to the 1890s caused urban residents to move their routines and habits-such as washing, bathing, and hauling water-from open ditches to the domestic sphere, catalyzing a retreat from the public in Los Angeles. This domestication of everyday life …
Water Infrastructure and Practical Knowledge in Progressive-Era Los Angeles
This article proposes that a history-of-knowledge approach offers innovative ways to study the use of domestic infrastructure in the household. More specifically, the article investigates the role of knowledge about water fixtures, such as meters, taps, and toilets, in the history of progressive-era Los Angeles. Building on the rich literature about how Los Angeles obtained its water, this article shifts the focus to the relationship that everyda…
Vorgeschichte der Gegenwart
Shelves of books have examined the 1970s as a turning point in the history of the twentieth century. They often cast important light on this decade as a time of crisis and profound economic and social unrest following the oil price jump of 1973/74. In a short book published in 2008, Anselm Doering-Manteuffel and Lutz Raphael labelled these years the epoch ‘after the boom’, meaning a time of diminishing possibilities and a prevailing feeling of cr…
Abschied vom Kalten Krieg?
The controversy about NATO`s Double-Track Decision unsettled West German society in the 1980s. It especially affected the Social Democrats, who were split between the policies of their Chancellor and the peace movement. The author draws on extensive sources to examine the dispute over the deployment of additional US atomic weapons. He argues that elements of the SPD viewed the Cold War as anachronistic long before it had actually come to an end.
Abschied Vom Kalten Krieg?
Freizeit ohne Kontrollen. Die Jugendzentrumsbewegung in der Bundesrepublik der 1970er Jahre
In this sweeping study, David Templin sheds new light on initiatives to establish youth centres in West Germany during the 1970s and 1980s. Drawing from remarkably extensive archival research, he concentrates on the movement’s heyday, which spanned the period from 1970 through 1982. Taking inspiration from scholars like Philippe Ariès, who has shown that ‘youth’ is a social construction rather than a biological given, and from historians like Sve…
