Temporal and spatial drivers of Lyme disease hazard differ between urban and rural environments
60 urban greenspaces and 48 rural woodlands were surveyed across the UK. • Nymphal ticks were detected in 73% of urban greenspaces and 98% of rural woodlands. • Urban nymph density & Lyme hazard linked to tree cover, connectivity & urbanisation. • Woodland age was the strongest predictor of rural nymph density and Lyme hazard. Our ability to predict how urban planning may influence public health and wellbeing is limited, because our understanding…
Knowledge management strategy for advancing the national health agenda in Dominica
The Ministry of Health and Environment (MoHE) of the Commonwealth of Dominica identified the need for a knowledge management strategy to advance the country’s national health agenda. The Pan American Health Organization and the MoHE conducted a rapid situation analysis of knowledge management in July 2015. The findings, analysis, and recommendations were developed jointly with a core team of the MoHE within the context of the strategic plan for h…
The geographic distribution of metals in urban soils
A Tale of Two Swaths
A growing body of research documents various prominent and important geographic dimensions to pediatric lead poisoning. This paper uses the Onondaga County Health Department database for 1992–1995 and the 1990 Census of Population and Housing data to analyze the spatial distribution of blood-lead levels in Syracuse, New York. Analyses are conducted at the individual, census block, census block group, and census tract resolutions. Regardless of ge…
Weight Loss for Women
Study 1 compared overweight adult women smokers (n = 50) and nonsmokers (n = 50) in an hypnosis-based, weight-loss program. Smokers and nonsmokers achieved significant weight losses and decreases in Body Mass Index. Study 2 treated 100 women either in an hypnosis only (n = 50) or an overt aversion and hypnosis (n = 50) program. This multicomponent follow-up study replicated significant weight losses and declines in Body Mass Index. The overt aver…
Participation in Multicomponent Hypnosis Treatment Programs for Women's Weight Loss with and without Overt Aversion
Studies of hypnotic, covert and overt aversive techniques have yielded equivocal results when each has been examined for a singular effect on weight lost. Some have advocated study of effective combinations of techniques before investing in other applications. Two programs of hypnosis, imagery, diet, tape, behavior management and support but differing in the overt use of aversion (electric shock, disgusting tastes smells) were examined. A total o…
Performance by Gender in a Stop-Smoking Program Combining Hypnosis and Aversion
Increased rates of smoking initiation and smoking-related illness among women have narrowed the gender gap in smoking behavior. Past studies of performance by gender in prevention and treatment programs have reported reduced success with women and have suggested a need for stronger interventions having greater effects on both genders' smoking cessation. A field study of 93 male and 93 female CMHC outpatients examined the facilitation of smoking c…

Self-Disclosure, Participation, and Perceived Cohesiveness in Small Group Interaction
In small, same-sex, undergraduate discussion groups ( N = 23), self-disclosure was associated significantly with perceived group cohesiveness, but not participation. Only males' self-disclosure (Jourard's questionnaire) was associated with perceived cooperation, and only females' self-disclosure was associated significantly with perceived norms and influence. Contrary to expectation, participation was associated significantly only with males' per…
College Students' Scores on Torrance's Tests of Creative Thinking
54 social work students were given a questionnaire and the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking. Ss' mean fluency, flexibility, and originality scores were analyzed by t tests against own sex, age, birth order, father's occupation, size of home community, class standing, and Torrance test scores from 10 college samples. Significant mean differences were only between (a) sophomores' and seniors' fluency and flexibility, (b) sophomores' and juniors'…
